I found it in a local Pawn Shop. It looked rough but has a tight lockup and the bore and cylinder chambers were clean. Herrett's target grips were as dry as the gun was. Very little finish on it. Dings on the underside of the barrel and on the edge (not the crown). Listed as $150. They said they would do $140 out the door.

I posted about it yesterday and thought I would offer $125 OTD. Everyone on this forum and RimfireCentral said to grab it, even at $140.

I thought on it overnight and decided to get it. There were different guys working today. I told them I was told $140 OTD yesterday, but asked if they would take $125 OTD. The guy said yes, but here is where it gets weirder...

I handed him my ID, my CCW and $130. He gives me back $13. The receipt shows it was $111 and with tax, about $117. Better deal than I even offered!

I took it home and took some before pictures, and after doing some cleaning and soaking with CLP. This thing MUST have ridden all over Idaho's prairies and mountains in a rancher's rig.

It is missing the front grip frame screw. The grip frame is aluminum, but the ejection rod housing is steel. No transfer bar conversion-YET.

The cylinder had some rust and pitting, and there was some on the cylinder shield on the left side. Serial number is in the 175,000 range.

Pretty neat ol' boy. Looks like it's name would be Jasper or Festus.

I attached some Before photos:

Those grips are gorgeous, very nice work and nice little vaquero you have there. I have been thinking about doing something similar in brass with a single-six stay-at-home project I have going. Care to share a brief summary of your method for doing that?

I made a couple stabbing chisels out of exacto knives. The blades are about the same thickness as the inlay wire I use. The sterling wire I use is from T.B. Hagstoz in Philadelphia, PA. I use size .008x.055" cloissonne. Work flow is basically to lay out the design, stab a groove into the wood, and then tap the wire into place. Sand smooth, and apply dye or stain and finish as usual. Just takes a little practice, but it is a rather simple process. There are a few tricks to learn along the way, like tapering the wire to make smooth transitions from multiple lines. Master smith Joe Keesler has a pretty good video series showing the process. I'd love to see your results when you get it done!

Really nice birds head. .45 colt or .44?
Thanks, it's a "new vaquero" 45 colt

Also have a 45C new vaquero 5.5" circa '07 or thereabouts with the color case finish that I'm quite fond of. I made this pair of walnut grips for it shortly after buying it back then.

I'll have to dig out the whole family (Just 2 vaqueros and 2 blackhawks all 45C) one of these days for updated pictures.

Only got two single actions so far the first one is a Cimarron Reproduction which is just beautiful in every possible way for me.

This one I bought at the same time but now I plan on either seeing if I can sell it back to the store, trade it in at the store or just sell it for full price to anyone willing to buy it.

Other than those two single actions I have a concealed carry M&P Bodyguard but that's another story.

And that Colt action is SWEET!

The closest I ever got to trying a Colt Single Action's trigger was with the Colt New Frontier .22s I had many years ago.

Thanks for the offer! Much appreciated! I'm not totally out of the picture as I do have a 3rd Gen. Colt Model 1860 that has a sweet trigger on it. And I still have my other single actions to play with til that some day (hopefully), when that "real Colt" comes along!

I used the technique of wrapping my pinky under my Flattop 44spl today...WHAT A DIFFERENCE! No knuckle wrap! Thanks for the suggestions. I love this gun!
