Ok friends and neighbors, here it is!

I've read a ton of posts over and over about how no one likes the internal lock on newer S&W revolvers. I understand the reasons why, and I wish they were not on the guns either. However, the bottom line is that they are, and I doubt the locks are going anywhere. This seems true since apparently their sales are and have been high enough to warrant producing and selling revolvers as they are currently being produced. I also see a lot of comments about documented cases of ILS failures.

So, let's generate some real numbers here. This is not an opportunity for people to complain, or debate the merits of the internal lock. This is meant as a number gathering exercise. The purpose of posting is being reserved for a specific purpose here.

Please read through the pole options, and select the most appropriate option. One vote will be allowed per person. I am only allowed to have 20 choices, so here is how it will work to cover the rest.

The first 15 choices will be "I've owned X number of S&W revolvers with an internal lock, and had no problems with any of them." If you have owned MORE THAN 15 and had no problem, DO NOT VOTE! Instead, post, and begin this way.

"No problems
X many owned (Should be a number greater than 15)"

If you have had problems with a S&W revolver that has an ILS, click on the poll option that is of the appropriate number. BUT ALSO, post in the following format.

"Failure, voted
X number of no problem guns"

If you've had MORE THAN 5 REVOLVERS WITH AN INTERNAL LOCK PROBLEM, DO NOT VOTE. Instead, post how many good ones and bad ones you've had. there should be more than 5 bad ones in your post.

The reason for the post instructions is that I am going to then go through the entire thread, and add up the results from the poll, as well as the posts that needed more options. I will then simply divide the total number of problem guns, by the total number of gun reported, in order to generate a simple percentage.

Since a failure to operate in a self defense senario is a serious problem, even if there is no damage to the gun, we will define problem guns as:

Any S&W revolver with an internal lock where the lock failed and needed to be repaired by you, a smith, or by S&W, or any S&W revolver where the internal lock engaged unintentionally and without the use of the key.

Also, if you had a lock and disabled it, I am throwing those numbers out of the count since it is not a relevant test of the mechanism, unless you had it functional for at least a year and shot it say..... at least 500 times. That's just the time and round count I am picking because I need to sort through that category somehow. Though a longer test period would be a lot better. So if you fit in there, include it in your count, on the poll.

To keep sorting through the thread easy, please refrain from lengthly stories or a gun by gun description of failures or proper function. If someone wants to build a seperate thread for that purpose in relation to this thread, go for it, but I really am looking for numbers, not stories.
Also, this thread is not meant to alter anyones opinions. Buy what you want. I just want to see how big of a problem the internal lock actually is.

P.S. I do not work for S&W.

Original post edited. I was already starting to get opinion posts, and posts that are not following the guidlines outlined for posting to keep it to numbers. I have removed my opinion from this thread, and am trying to keep it to numbers. I ask respectfully, that everyone try to follow suit, and leave opinions out. The bottom line is that in this particular thread, I don't care what anyone thinks about the lock system, I just want to record numbers of non-failing and failing guns.

Thanks All

I do not wish to derail the thread but I do wish to point out that Ruger has stopped doing internal locks and basically turned their backs on those states that require them. So I would just say that it is a possibility for S&W to stop making theirs with locks. I don't believe it is a feature that keeps them out of the courtroom.

I've owned no S&W's with the internal lock and will delete this post if requested. :)

Fair enough Craig. That is just my opinion. I think S&W doesn't want to turn their backs on any states if possible, if for nothing else, sales and profitability. You are right though. There is no federal law that requires the internal lock, so they do have the option to discontinue them.

But as I said, they are a reality right now, so I just want to see the numbers, so we actually have a relevant sample size.

I've had one 686 with a lock. I had zero problems with it through several thousand rounds in competition.

Because I permanently disabled the lock! :)

I have 2 S&W revolvers without locks. No problems.

On a more serious note, does anyone know which states require an internal lock???

I have one gun with a lock and replaced it with a plug before ever loading it up.:D

I believe S&W recently told the state of CA to "pound sand" on the microstamping requirement.

There is still hope.

... that said, I have owned 2 S&W's with locks,(and voted as such) and while neither had any failures, neither of them had triggers that were up to the standards of the pre lock S&W's I had owned. They have both moved along and have found new owners.

I may be interested in a new M69 if I find one that has a respectable trigger, and good fit and finish (something lacking in some of the new S&W's I've handled)

i think the only thing that will "settle this once and for all" is for s&w to go back to making guns without the dreaded lock.

they'd have a much better shot at gaining customers like myself if they did, and there wouldn't be any need for such a poll as you can't have a malfunction from something that simply isn't there.

until then...this debate will carry on.

Because you disabled the lock? Does this mean you had issues before you disabled it? If not then there is no way to prove it's flawless because you blocked it.

This is simple, vote in the poll and list your situation if required. No need for additional mess talking about removing your lock before shooting. This is for those who own and shoot a lock equipped S&W.

Howdy

I only have one S&W with MIM parts and an internal lock, a 617 that I bought used a couple of years ago. Had no trouble with it yet, but I haven't shot it much. I have a bazillion pre-lock/pre MIM parts Smiths. The oldest one was made in 1863. Haven't had any trouble with any of them, but I shoot the really old ones kind of sparingly.

Had one lock gun, a 617, internal lock. Lock flag failed in a partially raised position, required jiggling of the flag and key, & IIRC, the hammer to get it to go down. Worked after that. I was not the shooter at the time, I did do the trouble shooting to get it to work. Was not difficult to resolve, just not something I would want to deal with when hunting competing or in self defense.
I did have internal parts breakage with MIM parts on two other guns, a 66 & a 60.

I no longer own any of them, I'm getting old and that allows me to insist on blue steel and walnut of a similar age.

That really surprises me too. Notice there is no post for the number of good ones they had. It is possible they had no good ones , but yeah, curious.

If I was a corporate lawyer, my advice to the board of directors of S&W would be "What are you out of your minds? KEEP THE LOCK!" Reality is that it is a safety mechanism that helps keep them out of courtrooms, and the news, whether they are being used or not.
Absolutely incorrect, the S&W ILS is not a safety device, it's a storage device.
I currently own none of their revolvers equipped with the ILS.

460Kodiak:
Of the 'modern' as in MIM parts guns, I've had a 60, 640 & 66 without the lock & a 617 with it.
60 & 66 broke, 617 had a lock malfunction but did no break, 640 was fine.

My BIL has a 686 Competitor with lock, no issues to date.

Currently I own a Model 28 from 1968 & a Model 18 from 1977. The Model 18 had a trigger return issue when I bought it, is running well at the moment. My sense if aesthetics has changed over the years, If I found a post lock gun that floated my boat then I would buy it. The current offerings do not appeal.

I've also shot a fairly large selection of S&Ws over the years: Models 1006, 15,17, 18, 19, 22A, 27, 28, 29, 34, 4006, 41, 422, 59, 60, 65, 66, 586, 617, 625, 629,640, 686, 2206, in some cases multiple copies of a single model, all pre-lock, no issues other than an extractor problem on the Model 41.

The chances of a breakage on a low round count shoot of a borrowed gun are quite slim, but the confirmation bias does build up, to the point that my preference is not to own guns with MIM parts or the dreaded lock.

For the purposes of this exercise, I have owned one gun with a lock, it had a non permanent failure.
