Some rifles have Last Shot Bolt Hold Open Devices, some don't. In either case, Last Shot Bolt Hold-Open Device is too long.

Is there a shorter name we could call this feature on a rifle? A bolt stop? Bolt lock? Something like that? Bolt catch?

LOL

Okay...back to homework...

All of the above? Bolt stop, bolt catch, and hold open device are the most common terms in semi-auto rifles. Like many other parts, the actual name used is up to the designer/manufacturer. The "hold open device" can also serve another purpose and be called by that name. For example, on the Mauser '98 rifle, the magazine follower does the job of stopping the bolt on an empty magazine. In the U.S. M1 carbine, the slide lock is purely for manual operation; some magazines have a special follower which holds the bolt to signal an empty magazine, but does not allow reloading from that position.

Sometimes, the hold open device is nowhere near the bolt. On the M1 rifle, it is the operating rod catch which serves the purpose.

I agree with Jim, there are about 20 different ways to accomplish locking the bolt back, and about that many different names for it as well. I've always used BHO for Bolt Hold Open.

I prefer the bolt to lock back and stay there on an empty magazine. I have an L1a1 that came with out one, and I swapped the part for a Metric FAL version so that it would lock back. The lack of a BHO is one of my few dislikes on AK type rifles.
