I had my Mosin 91/30 leaning against the bookshelf behind my desk at the office today. Two employees from Mexico commented that it reminded them of the Mauser. One said that his father had a Mauser on his ranch in Mexico. The other's grandfather had one. He said that after the Revolution the government issued them with ammo to a few people from each pueblito to defend against armed raiders (presumably remnants of Villistas).
That got me thinking. What if we did away with the BATF and used the money to do the same? I got the 2006 BATF budget from this page: http://www.whitehouse.gov/omb/budget/fy2006/justice.html
In 2006 the BATF had a budget of $924,000,000. That's $924 Million. Almost a billion dollars.
There are approximately 300,000,000 Americans.
If we could get enought Mosin Nagants and find enough milsurp ammo (!) at the price I paid for the rifle and 800 rounds of 7.62x54R, we could arm 5,600,000 Americans. That's almost one in 50. You can work out the details for me as long as I get credit when the law is passed.
So who's gonna be the first to propose this to Speaker Pelosi?
