I think it's time to start letting Obama know how we feel in a constructive manner without being hateful or expressing anger. Below is a letter that i just sent off to obama as well as every senator that had an email address.

To Whom It May Concern,

My name is Jeffrey Mays, my family and I are currently stationed in Kodiak, Ak with the US Coast Guard. At an early age i was introduced to the joy of the outdoors. Hiking, fishing, hunting, and camping surround some of my most precious childhood memories. I was educated in the safe handling of firearms and their lawful and ethical use regarding hunting and general recreational use. I have been a law abiding firearms owner for well over 20 years. I have insisted that my wife and children practice safe handling of firearms at all times. In return we have created fond memories for our own children that hopefully they will carry with them for life.
I firmly believe that the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban did nothing to stop crime or deter criminals. A criminal by nature shows no regard for law or human life. What the Assault Weapons Ban did accomplish was mass purchasing hysteria, driving market value through the roof. The ban also banned firearms based on cosmetic features such as bayonet lugs, flash suppressors, and folding stocks. I could legally own a rifle with a bayonet lug and flash suppressor, but it could not have a folding stock! Tell me what difference the folding stock made? The ban was superficial!
Sixty million American law abiding firearm owners continue to see progressively more rules and regulations with regards to ownership and use of their firearms. There are many uneducated Americans who would like nothing more than to see every firearm removed from private owners. The above scenario would resemble the laws currently in place in England. Currently in England crime is rampant and the common citizen is at the mercy of criminals who by the way still posses firearms.
Those same American that would take away my right to own firearms and to participate in hunting activities are neglecting to realize several important factors. Sportsman provide billions of dollars each year through donations and taxes that restore habitat, provide firearms education, and control ever increasing populations of game animals. Without hunters, animal populations will skyrocket opening avenues for disease, over grazing, and wildlife invasion into urban areas. Those who oppose hunting because of “cruelty” to animals fail to recognize that mother-nature is far crueler than any hunter will ever be. Deer for example do not naturally regulate their population. The population will continue to grow until there is no room or food for the population leading to starvation. Attacks from predatory animals are a common occurrence in the news. With the depletion of habitat animals are naturally moving into populated areas looking for “greener pastures”.
I don’t know if you have ever had the honor of tasting a venison or elk steak, but let me tell you the taste rivals anything you can purchase in the finest restaurant. The sight of quail flushing from their covey or the early morning sound of a bugling bull Elk will raise the hair on the back of your neck and make you appreciate our Country.
Sportsmen are some of the nicest people you will ever meet. We enjoy life to its fullest and are always willing to share our sport with others. Our sport runs the gamut from extremely wealthy to dirt poor. But the common factor is that we all care tremendously for our sport and our Country.

Thanks for your time,

Jeffrey Mays

"To whom it may concern" is a sure way to get a letter ignored. It pays to take the extra few minutes to personalize the letter. That said, even a "To who it may concern" message is better than one left unsent.

How about:

Dear Barry, or His Royal Majesty or Our father who AREN'T in heaven. LOL

Seriously though, he will likely never even hear about it, even if these letters number in the millions. Not to mention that he doesn't care what we the people think or want. Other than that, good idea, why not try.

Point well taken, but on the other hand...

I realize that Obama or any of the senators will never read my letter, they pay people to read the letters for them. My main point was to intelligently share my views and love of the outdoors with someone who might not have thought about how the other half views the subject. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Banning firearms, although to some sounds like a very simple idea, may have some unintended consequences. As i stated England should be used as an example. Firearms were banned to control crime, but now crime is ever more present. The plan kinda backfired didn't it!
Thanks for your comments

Throttle Jockey,

I disagree.

Sure, he may never read the letter personally. However, President Obama is an elected representative, and his duty is to represent the people of the United States.

He does care about what 'We the People' think and want, because he will be seeking reelection in four years.

It is our duty as gun owners to make our voices heard by writing our representatives, speaking out, and voting for those who appreciate our views.

Yes Tyrannosaurus, you are sort of right. But if he gave a rats butt what we want, why did he sign the bail out? Also, WE aren't really the ones to decide who is elected. And don't forget the simple fact that he doesn't even know what his job is. He thinks it is to "run this country", when actually that is the job of congress. His job is the commander in chief of our military, with veto power as part of our checks and balances system. Anything he does other than that is actually out of line, and overstepping the bounds of his "elected" title.

I have to agree with ThrottleJockey, if you are not helping build his ego, or telling him what a great job he is doing. One of his countless aides will file your letter away in a box to be shipped to the "His Excellency Library," :barf: upon completion of his term as President, of these United States.

If you want someone to read it find a congressman or senator with a fax machine  fax it 2 times a day until you get a response. Yes it does work, they check the fax machine every time it spits out a page.

I don't think there's anything wrong with expressing your views with a letter. I'm certainly not going to discourage another gun owner from doing it.

Chicken-Farmer also noted that he sent this email to each senator whom he could find an email address for.

Not true. A bayonet lug is functional, as is a flash suppressor, and a folding stock.

The reason is very simple: they want to remove any feature that makes it more suitable to militia use.

Bayonet lugs, bayonets, detachable magazines, standard capacity magazines (the ability to reload quickly, as one would need in militia arm), flash suppressors (no big fireballs to give away your position), short barrels, folding stocks (better for certain situations), automatic fire...

All things a tyrannical government needs to ban in order to prevent any real resistance from the general populace, and the reason behind the Second Amendment.

They know gun control means nothing to a criminal, and that these types of rifles are used extremely rarely in crime, and that most guns used in crimes are stolen. Gun control != Crime control. Crime control = lock up the criminal.

They do not care about crime control. In fact, crime creates the "crisis" they need to convince the sheep that they need gun control.

Never accuse them of being stupid, unknowledgable, or ill-informed. They know exactly what they want, and they don't care how long it takes, or how many lies they have to tell.

However, President Obama is an elected representative, and his duty is to represent the people of the United States.

This is very true. BUT he still chooses who he represents depending on what he's doing at the time. IOW, when he's signing the bill that will remove all firearms for the citizen's possession (just an extreme example), he will be representing the Brady Center and other anti-gun groups. He will not be representing the majority of the country.

The fax machine is a good idea. Sooner or later they'll get tired of them, and read and reply just to stop the letters. E-mails are just to easy to delete without reading.

The 2nd Amendment is not about hunting!
That's very true. The founding fathers believed that the right to keep and bear arms was essential to the preservation of liberty. Let's not forget the first part about the well regulated militia.

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

Note that the original copy of the constitution did not have a comma between the words "Militia" and "being," which can substantially change the meaning of the Amendment. I see it as this: because a well regulated (organized, disciplined) militia is necessary to the security of a free state, you can't take away people's right bear arms.

The reason is very simple: they want to remove any feature that makes it more suitable to militia use.

Does the US Army fight with bayonets on their M-16s? No. Damned if I know why they put the lugs on their to begin with.

Elected reps don't worry to much about the specifics of letters like this, but they count the pros vs the antis. It's oft been said that a politician's stand depends on where they sit, as recently been illustrated by Sen. Gillibrand's garbled comments about guns.

I think people misjudge how Obama will behave for this reason too. As a senator from Chicago, Obama had to have an anti-gun position. Now that he holds nationwide office, he has to pay attention to the whole country. He is going to need the votes of pro-gun congressmen and senators for things he cares about a lot more than guns.

I think you want to keep up the pressure on both Houses of Congress. State governments are also more likely to act than the Federal government, IMHO.

I believe the best way to reach our representatives with correspondence is with an old-fashioned letter. Those who have done so know that you usually get some sort of hand signed response (and more campaign mail at election time).

Does the US Army fight with bayonets on their M-16s? No. Damned if I know why they put the lugs on their to begin with.

I was going to mention the same thing. Can anyone recently back from the land of sand tell if the bayonet is even employed anymore? I can tell you first hand that back during the first sand-land engagement (or even when I was in Israel) that I didn't see a single one attached.

Sure, he may never read the letter personally. However, President Obama is an elected representative, and his duty is to represent the people of the United States.

You are joking, right? How is passing a bill that puts every man woman and child $60,000+ in debt representing us? Our Reps. told him NO. He completely ignored the 90+% of the people who said "NO STIMULUS". Don't forget for a minute what he said about those of us who cling to guns and religion.

The bayonets are still issued but the only combat use they ever see is opening up the MRE's. Most soldiers pick up an extra mag here and there if they can, so hopefully it would never come to "AFFIX BAYONETS!"

That's pretty good, just like others said don't put to whom this may concern in it. I appreciate you taking the time to type and put this letter together. Anything at all will help our fight.

The "people" who read those letters (i.e. instead of the Elected official themselves) keep score. They determine the key points of the communication and keep a tally which is statistically analyzed, and reported to the proper committee who statistically analyze the info, who report it to the originally intended recipient.

The key is numbers... volume and consistency. I think it's great that the OP wrote a letter to begin with. That takes motivation... My hats off to you!! :)

How many of you all that sit here and participate on this forum night after night, consistently write or phone your elected officials to let them know, in a civil and "High Road" way, what your position is on pending legislation??

We need everyone to make themselves heard from the grass roots level... and eventually we will see the results...

There are many elected officials who have forgotten who they represent, but what makes matters MUCH worse is when WE forget who they are supposed to be representing!!!!!!!!!!

I sent him a letter too. The gist of it said that if he keeps pushing gun control he will be a 1 term president and will be voted out of office quickly. And anyone else who tries as well

He wants to get elected again, so our guns are safe for at least 4 years. It's time to calm down, take a breath and let it go for a little while.
