I think it's time to start letting Obama know how we feel in a constructive manner without being hateful or expressing anger. Below is a letter that i just sent off to obama as well as every senator that had an email address.
To Whom It May Concern,
My name is Jeffrey Mays, my family and I are currently stationed in Kodiak, Ak with the US Coast Guard. At an early age i was introduced to the joy of the outdoors. Hiking, fishing, hunting, and camping surround some of my most precious childhood memories. I was educated in the safe handling of firearms and their lawful and ethical use regarding hunting and general recreational use. I have been a law abiding firearms owner for well over 20 years. I have insisted that my wife and children practice safe handling of firearms at all times. In return we have created fond memories for our own children that hopefully they will carry with them for life.
I firmly believe that the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban did nothing to stop crime or deter criminals. A criminal by nature shows no regard for law or human life. What the Assault Weapons Ban did accomplish was mass purchasing hysteria, driving market value through the roof. The ban also banned firearms based on cosmetic features such as bayonet lugs, flash suppressors, and folding stocks. I could legally own a rifle with a bayonet lug and flash suppressor, but it could not have a folding stock! Tell me what difference the folding stock made? The ban was superficial!
Sixty million American law abiding firearm owners continue to see progressively more rules and regulations with regards to ownership and use of their firearms. There are many uneducated Americans who would like nothing more than to see every firearm removed from private owners. The above scenario would resemble the laws currently in place in England. Currently in England crime is rampant and the common citizen is at the mercy of criminals who by the way still posses firearms.
Those same American that would take away my right to own firearms and to participate in hunting activities are neglecting to realize several important factors. Sportsman provide billions of dollars each year through donations and taxes that restore habitat, provide firearms education, and control ever increasing populations of game animals. Without hunters, animal populations will skyrocket opening avenues for disease, over grazing, and wildlife invasion into urban areas. Those who oppose hunting because of “cruelty” to animals fail to recognize that mother-nature is far crueler than any hunter will ever be. Deer for example do not naturally regulate their population. The population will continue to grow until there is no room or food for the population leading to starvation. Attacks from predatory animals are a common occurrence in the news. With the depletion of habitat animals are naturally moving into populated areas looking for “greener pastures”.
I don’t know if you have ever had the honor of tasting a venison or elk steak, but let me tell you the taste rivals anything you can purchase in the finest restaurant. The sight of quail flushing from their covey or the early morning sound of a bugling bull Elk will raise the hair on the back of your neck and make you appreciate our Country.
Sportsmen are some of the nicest people you will ever meet. We enjoy life to its fullest and are always willing to share our sport with others. Our sport runs the gamut from extremely wealthy to dirt poor. But the common factor is that we all care tremendously for our sport and our Country.
Thanks for your time,
Jeffrey Mays
