With the current state of affairs in the South, particularly New Orleans, I felt moved to do the only thing that I could--which is to write a letter to the Governor of Louisiana.

Here it is:

Gov. Blanco:

I know that I am far removed from the State of Louisiana, and can only try to understand the tribulations your State is experiencing--and will experience in the future. My prayers for you and the people of Louisiana.

However, I must address a matter that has me concerned as an American citizen. This is the ongoing confiscation of legally owned firearms in the City of New Orleans--not from those who are in the commission of a crime, but (from my understanding) from private citizens, whose only transgression is to choose to stay in their homes.

I don't know if you are familiar with the story of one Harry Truman (not the President), a homeowner who lived on Spirit Lake, near Mt. St. Helens. Shortly before the eruption of May 18, 1981, he was asked to evacuate. He refused--saying that he had lived there his whole life, and would die there if necessary. He lost his life in the eruption.

It is my understanding that there are some citizens of the City of New Orleans who have chosen to stay in their homes. These people more than likely own firearms--and in this case, they are being used to protect themselves and their property.

Apparently, the Mayor of New Orleans has seen fit to authorize the confiscation of privately owned, legally owned firearms. The Chief of Police has stated that "Only the police should have firearms". (New York Times)

Governor Blanco, I must ask as an American citizen that you intervene in this area--after all (again, from my understanding), the Louisiana National Guard--of which you are the Commander in Chief-- is participating in this exercise.

Please have them stop the unwarranted intrusion into the private homes of your constituents. And, please make them stop the unlawful confiscation of privately, legally owned firearms from the homes of these constituents. Please give these people the chance to make their own choice. After all, it's their right to do so!

And please notify the Mayor of New Orleans to cease and desist. I sincerely believe that he means well by this order--but the wholesale trampling of the individual rights protected by the Constitution of the United States is not the right way.

Thank you for your time and attention; I pray that God will bless you and your State in this time of crisis.

Respectfully,

(signature block here)

I encourage everyone to write in. This Nation will perish--only if we let it! Let us denounce this act while we can do so with our writing and our words.
