Can anyone explain, in simple easy to understand terms, just how the hell to use the TMR reticle?

I printed out the manual...35 pages long. Lots of math...gives me a damn headache.

It's in a VX-3i 6-20 30mm. Great scope, but it's the only reticle my LGS had in stock. Didnt feel like waiting for one that I wanted to come back into production.

Its busy...I'm used to MOA, this is my first Millradian..not too sure I like it.

I zeroed at 100 yards with 168 HPBT MKs, moving at 2650 fps. None of the mill lines work as hold overs at all. Not at 200, 300, 400...I gave up after that. I can group at each range, so I know the rifle and load work, as will the scope if I can figure out how the dang reticle works..

Anyone explain it to me like I'm a 10 year old?

#1 Sounds like you're trying to use it like a BDC reticle, and it's not, its more complex, but more flexible & accurate.

#2, Your'e going to have to look at some ballistic tables (in MILS) to figure out what the relative holdovers are for your rifle cartridge. That will give you you drop and subsequent hold over. You will need to know your MV for that catridge/rifle.

There's downloadable free ballistic apps you can use to try in out. Look for the STRELOK free APP for your phone. Basically you plug in your cartridge data, MV and BCs, your zero distance (sometimes zero conditions) and the current conditions (wind, pressure, humidity), then the target distance & angle. Then it will compute the correct hold over and windage in MILs for that target.

I'd suggest spending some time on YouTube, there's some pretty good videos that will explain it far better than a forum post can....

This one?

Just looked at the manual, egads....it's way easier to use it with a ballistic app, then dial or hold the appropriate amount..

Here’s your load in Strelok with your reticle. It’s better to make a chart of your drop in mils and tape it to your stock though. With a bit of use, a mil scope is much better than a BDC style reticle.

Wow. That app is great!

Is it worth buying the pro version for 12 bucks?

A bunch of us started with the free version and now we're all using Pro....it's up to you really. The author is constantly adding reticles and is very responsive. There;s also a Facebook group for the software.

For what it's worth, I still have and use BDC type reticles for hunting and 3 gun matches. I simply find them faster to use and withing their range limitations "accurate enough".

Ya, I've always prefered BDCs myself. I always managed to be able to tune a load to both match the reticle, and still group well.

Ive shot a deer at 550 yards with one. One shot drop right through the heart.

But, I can see the potential of this reticle. Maybe time to expand my horizons.

I bought the pro version.

You guys are not kidding! Great app.

Igor was very helpful too. Answered my questions fast, help my dumb ass figure it right out!

Well worth 12 bucks!

Now that you've got the app, you can also play with your BDC reticles and sort out what they'll really correspond to distance wise. Also play with what the deltas are in holdovers due to changes in conditions.

Even with the MIL reticle there's still some "interperlating" as far as the .1 mils due to the .5 hashes. The most accurate is turning the turret, 2nd using the reticle. The software will also tell you very quickly what a .1mil at X yards really equals. I find it great when working with guys that are chasing shots within their group size.

What I prefer about the BDCs is their simplicity and speed for certain uses no real "counting" involved and generally not having to refer to a dope chart on my stock or an APP. IMHO perfectly acceptable for normal hunting distances and more accurate than using a duplex and holding on "hairline of back for 300" or "ears for 400" etc.

Don’t make it more complicated than it needs to be. Don’t waste time thinking about drop in inches, don’t waste time with BDC games, just develop your data to correlate range and drop (in mils), and live happy.

If you’re ranging with your reticle, you need a little math in your knowledge base , but in 2020 and beyond, with a laser rangefinder and a mobile phone with a ballistic calculator app, there’s no reason to live with the inaccuracy of mil ranging. But the whole game of converting back and forth to inches, or messing with BDC type holding is just an invitation for headache and heartache. BDC holding can be nice to have on a range card, but the math is too difficult to do in the field - you’re stuck compromising even more than you would by estimating 1/5th of a gap. What’s the hold for 512 yards based on the above reticle photo? Somewhere between the 494 and 535 marks, somewhere... why not make life easier, know that it’s 3.8, hold 3/5 of the gap above the 4 mil hash, and send it...

Once you have your data in hand, this is really all you need to know about your reticle.

A quick note on Strelok and Igor (the author).

Yesterday I was out zeroing my newly built AR15 SPR upper and was using Strelok to calculate my 200yd zero to obtain the 100y offset after chronographing the load. Somehow I did "something" and my MRAD display after calculating went "dark". It was still calculating, but the MRAD wasn't lit. I checking other displays on my tablet and all was well, definitely something in Strelok.

This morning I emailed Igor and within 30 minutes had a response telling me how to fix the issue. Turns out it's not really an issue, but a feature. A long "Tap" on any of the calculation solutions, will dim the ones you don't want to see IE shooting an MRAD scope; don't want to get confused with MOA, just tap and "Dim" it. Want to see Turret VS Clicks, just "tap" and switch.

I've been using Strelok Pro for a few years now and I just learned something new, and confirmed how responsive the author is.
