I was looking at a pair of Leupold 2-7x32 scopes recently in Bass Pro. One was a VX-2 at $300, and the other was a VX-1 priced at $220. Handling and looking through both side by side, I could discern no difference in build or optical quality. So, what's the difference, besides $80? I'm guessing the VX-2 may offer a little better light-gathering ability for a few extra minutes of shooting time at dusk and dawn. Is that it, or am I missing something?

The VX2 lens coatings should be a little better at reducing flare/glare/haze when the sun is at a bad angle.

No doubt there are some "improvements" to the VX-2 over the VX -1. Whether or not it's worth an extra $80...you need to be the judge. I've got two of the VX-1's, one on a center fire and on on a .22 LR. Both have performed very well, and I'm 100% satisfied, FWIW. Good luck!

There are some differences in lense coatings that will make the VX-2 a slightly better scope in low light. The difference is small, and only really usable for a few minutes early in the AM just before sunrise and a few minutes in the evening right at sunset. That is also prime time to take shots while hunting so it is something to consider. In normal light you will probably never notice any difference. Both are equally durable and reliable.

One thing to note, over the years Leupold has had numerous upgrades to their scopes. Sometimes changing names, Vari-X III, VX-III, VX-3 and now VX-3i. In 2012 they upgraded the entire VX line of scopes with no name change. A current VX-2 is essentially the same scope as a pre-2012 VX-3. The current VX-1 is essentially an older VX-2.

I've not handled the newest VX-3i, but for my money the current VX-2 is more than adequate and I'd not pay the difference for a VX-3. The VX-1 is a perfectly acceptable scope. To me the VX-2 is worth the small difference, but I'd not feel handicapped at all with a VX-1.

jmr40 is right ,Leopold does update their scopes from time to time. I have the new updated VX1 3x9 on my Ruger 77 .308 and think its a awesome scope for around 200 bucks. hdbiker

I too have a VX-1 on my Ruger M77 MKII, I bought the rifle and the scope about 10 years ago, been very happy with both. I've never had a VX-2 so I can't say if they're much better than the VX-1. All I can say is that I like my VX-1 and can recommend them.

I have VX1, VX2, VX III, VX 3, and just ordered a VX3i. Each iteration is a bit better than the last...mostly I notice the improved clarity and sharpness of focus. However, the AO feature is sometimes not improved. In terms of the AO feature, I see no difference between my VX II and VXIII. And the markings on the AO knurl are pretty much meaningless in my experience. I have it on Leupold, Bushnell, and Burris. It's all about the same, but would give the nod to Burris on that feature. That said, my Leupold VX3 3.5-10X is my best scope (no AO feature). I recently ordered the same scope in the VX3i to put on a Tikka .243. Great scope.
