Lever Action Rifle

My Dad has a Marlin lever gun that uses 45-70. I have the 45-70 rifle my uncle made with a Martini type action. He calls me an "ungrateful whelp" everytime he tries to talk me into trading. Even when my uncle was still alive to "tune" that rifle it seemed like there were always feeding problems and the recoil defeated every pad Dad ever tried. I can get a better rate of fire out of the single shot than he can the lever action because of it. And the Martini action is cuter.

IMHO, the 1886 is twice the rifle the Marlin is. If the Marlin feels lighter, it's because they use the same receiver for the 1895 and 336. Which is why it's length-limited and the 1886 is good for 10,000psi higher pressures. My 22" Marlin 1895SS is a half pound lighter than the current 24" model 71. The 1886 is a stronger action due to its massive vertical locking lugs and it can handle cartridges up to the .50-110. The fit & finish of these rifles, be they original Winchesters or late model Browning/Winchester Miroku-made guns or the new Pedersoli's, is head and shoulders above anything Marlin has ever produced. The newer Winchesters are drilled and tapped for a receiver sight, as are the current Italian replicas. The only advantage the Marlin has is the ease of mounting a traditional scope. The Pedersoli guns are available with a scout rail and a synthetic stock.

and the Marlin is already tapped for a receiver peep (the 1886 was not, my 71 is.)

The receiver on my Winchester, aka Miroku, Model 1886 "Extra Light Weight" rifle was drilled and tapped for receiver sights (a Williams "Fool Proof" peep sight fits my rifle perfectly on the factory receiver).

Nice! I wish my Browning 1886 would have been tapped... but it's a moot point, now.
