Leveraction extra ammo

um....in my pocket? Why would carrying ammo for a levergun be any different than any other style of firearm?
 
Because a spare magtube is not very handy and 45-70 ammo in my pants is not very comfortable.

I was wondering if there is not a better solution like a bandoleer, maybe a buttstock holder or something like that.
 
I keep my .30-30 ammo in a speedstrip for a .45colt. They fit perfectly and stay organized in pocket or pouch. Also makes it easy to grab the rifle and some extra ammo from the gun safe and go.
 
Cartridge belt. You can also get much cheaper cartridge belt sliders that hold about 6 cartridges.
 
I have a question that will come across as being smart#$# but isn't meant to be.
Why do you need to carry extra ammo for a lever gun? I assume this is while out in the field hunting or maybe hiking? I have a 30-30 that I hunt with on occasion but I never carry extra ammo on my person because I have NEVER, in 40+ years of deer hunting, fired more than 4 shots on one outing with a rifle.

As I said before this is just me wondering and I am sure there is probably a good reason, one of which is that you like to have extra just in case. I have seen those elastic wraps that go on the gun stock but have never used one.
 
Get yourself one of those Levis jackets with the semi synthetic sheep wool interior, with the slash pockets just above your waistline. Jam your gloves in one pocket, your cat'ridges in the other, happy trails !
 
I use a buttstock ammo holder. I try to match up the ammo holder with the firearm. For example on my Marlin lever action, it has a 7 round tube magazine so I put on a 7 round buttstock carrier. On my Savage bolt (that I just traded) it had a 3 round box magazine so I found a 9 round buttstock carrier. Keeps things nice and simple.
 
Dunkelheit: I have hunted with a Lever Action Rifle since I was a kid. I am 70 yrs old now. And I always carry extra ammo with me. As one of the guys pointed out I never really needed it but (( WHAT IF ). I was raised in Oklahoma and West Texas and most of the Old Men I grew up with carried a Lever Action Rifle. And most of them carried a ammo belt. a bandoleer, or a butt stock holder of some sort, or a fold over billafold type holder that held 4 or 5 rounds on each side, they carried in there pocket. I now favor a butt stock holder most of the time, but a bandoleer is not out of the question You don`t have to carry it completely full. What make of 45-70 do you carry and what do you hunt with it in Germany. The 45-70 I use most of the time now is a old Marlin 1895 with a 26 in barrel that holds 9 rounds. But like You I always carry extra ammo some way. I would really be interested to hear how and what you hunt in Germany with your 45-70. I have hunted alot witha 45-70 and I am very found of it.

I use one of two methods. This image shows both, but I generally don't use both at the same time.

I have an elastic buttstock holder on my .44 Marlin. Between that and a full tube, I'm generally good. Back in the old days, when I'd spend the weekend in the desert, I'd probably want to carry more, maybe an ammo belt...

I want to use a Marlin 1895SBL for hunting boars, they are also the most dangerous animals i would meet in the woods over here.There are different types of hunting allowed in Germany, most common is hunting form a raised hide or battue in corn fields or the woods.

But first of all you need to pass some by goverment required exams which include shooting,laws,biology. (up to $3000 fees). If you hunt without a permission you will be accoused for poaching and illegal gun carrying/owning which are crimes in Germany. If you dont own a hunters license or be member of a official shooting federation (which are also be controlled and authorised by goverment) you are not allowed to buy or own any type of firearm.
 
I usually have my extra in a cartridge belt. I have one kicking around for my revolver in .45LC, so it works out well.
 
My original '73 has a slide on the butt plate to access a hole in the stock for a four piece cleaning rod. No cleaning rod unfortunately, but four rounds of 38-40 fit very nicely in there.
 
Elastic buttstock holder. If I can't hit something with all that, I better use the rifle as a bat to begin with. :)
