Hi folks, working on a sar-1 romanian semi. It has some small spots of rust and a dusting of rust on the top cover. I need to do some light rust removal but not strip the whole thing. Im going to bake on a coat of black hi temp grill paint. Whats the method for removing the rust?

^ What that crazy guy said. As long as the rust isn't "pitting" to where you can feel a difference, it is pretty easy to remove. 0000 steel wool is not something you can regularly find at Wal-Mart so head to Lowes or Home-Depot. G96 triple action is my go to oil for light rust removal

We have been using some paper and liquid rust and corrosion prevention products in our shop we got from a company called Daubert Cromwell. We have had heavy surface rust we have removed using a dip from them called evapo-rust. Simply dip the item, let it sit for a few mins, then rinse and dry. No more rust! There stuff is on Amazon.

I hate using steel wool on any metal finish.

I'd advise testing that before you use it on blued metal. Bluing is a form of controlled rusting and most rust removing chemicals will happily remove the blue along with the rust.

Gentle rubbing with 0000 steel wool and oil will not harm bluing. At least it hasn't any of the hundreds of times I've done it so far.

Same here. As I've said MANY times before, I use it VIGOROUSLY on guns fresh out of the bluing tank. It does not harm bluing.

While I generally suggest oil and 0000 steel wool for light rust remove, since you are going to coat over it, I think your best option to keep rust from coming back under the coating is to have the metal bead blasted.

I would use the steel woo and oil method first. If that does not work I would go more aggressive and use media blasting. Just make sure you properly clean the surface before applying the paint or it will bubble and run. Please don't ask how I know. Lol

Count the zeros. 0000 steel wool feels more like course beard hair than traditional steel wool. I have removed light rust from air guns, blued guns, SS guns etc. I even keep a small patch of 0000 steel wool in my gun cleaning kit for this purpose.

Is black hi temp grill paint BBQ paint? BBQ paint is for Al. Al doesn't rust. However, Krylon or Tremclad paints are for steel. Both come in flat black engine paint. So, it's 0000 steel wool and oil then either of them. Just not 'grill' paint.
"...There stuff is..." That'd be, 'There is stuff." Or did you mean 'Their stuff'? snicker.

Ballistol....

In 1999, I used a can of Ballistol to clean/refurbish my cousin's rusted/dirty Remington 1100 semi automatic 12ga shotgun.
It worked great. :D
It took some effort but the Ballistol really did the job. It was like a TV infomercial.
FWIW; I also heard auto grade sandpaper; 800/1000 grit help remove minor scuffs-marks.

Kroil and 0000 steel wool or Blue Wonder and 0000 steel wool. The oil holds the rust particles in suspension so the blueing is generally not harmed. Kroil is a very good penetrative oil which helps get under the rust for removal by the steel wool. I also use Blue Wonder from Brownells but it is mildly alkaline and surfaces must be treated with oil subsequently. BTW, FWIW at WalMart SuperCenters, they do sell steel wool in 0000 and other grades--check the paint department.

If the part is removable, you can try electrolysis which is beyond the scope of the question here.

Deep Creep in a spray can is a small engine mechanics dream for every use. Available at most auto parts store, have access to plenty of fresh air.

i use 0000 steel wool and some oil as well.. my shotgun seems to be prone to getting light spots of rust, for really light stuff though i managed to clean a significant amount of it off with this 3-in-1 solvent/lubricant stuff and an abrasive dish scrubbing pad thingie

question, what do you do about light rust in areas you cant reach with anything?

I built an electrolysis tank from a piece of 6" PVC, capped on the ends with one side cut away to make a long tank. Glued a few short pieces of 1" PVC in the bottom to prevent any accidental contact between the parts and the cathode. Works great.
