Picked this up for the XBox. Despite several mediocre reviews, I'm loving this game. It's got loads of theme and style, nice story (cliche, sure, but its a western!), and it's fun to boot. The XBox version features a pretty entertaining multiplayer mode.

You play Red, half-indian bounty hunter, out to avenge the deaths of his parents. During flashbacks and side quests you get to play as some of the secondary characters like Jack Swift, English gunslinger in a bowler hat; Annie Stoaks, rifle woman and ranch owner; and Shadow Wolf, a stealthy indian warrior (plus two others).

Stages include a ranch, canyons, the town of Brimstone, the ghost town Widow's Patch, Mexican fortresses, mansions, mines, and more. You typically have one sidearm and one long gun, a full assortment of revolvers, rifles, and shotguns (even a rifle with a working bayonette).

Gameplay is a 3rd person shooter... you can (and usually) run and gun or take it slower and "tactically". Cover is a big mechanic, you lean against objects with the X-button and shoot from behind it. Some missions you have the option of using stealth. There are treats like using gatling guns or fighting from horseback. Collect bounties and buy weapons, upgrades, or unlock story/multiplayer elements. Red has a special ability called Deadeye, which is- roughly- bullet time basically... other characters have other special abilities that spice up the game.

Finally, there's a duel mechanic that's hard to explain, but basically you press down to grab your gun, press up to draw it, then fire from the hip using these timed cursors... of course you need to do it more quickly and accurately than the other guy.

Anyways, there hasn't been a good western game out in a while so I'd encourage gun gamers to at least check it out... it'll make you want to buy a lever action and watch a "Man With No Name" marathon. Anyone else playing this?

i just saw a commercial and it looks pretty interesting. are you pretty free to move around (like mafia or grand theft auto) or is it more confined?

The game was developed by Angel for Capcom... originally, it was kinda fruity and had more fantastic elements (like giants and flying men- think Trigun). However they canned it, but Rockstar took it under their wing and revamped it to be closer to the western films in homage. The point is, it isn't a "free roaming" Rockstar game like GTA.

The game is pretty linear, with chapters that drive the story and the game. Each chapter is usually made up of 1-2 levels and end with a "boss" battle. The levels themselves are pretty open and "free roaming" but winning is either linear or condition based. For example, in the Ghost Town, you've got to kill all the enemies to advance... the town is a linear street, but you can run to the end and fight your way back if you wanted to (actually this is what I do). The ranch stage is pretty open and you fight wave of enemies that come from all directions. Obviously a level like a mine or a manor is going to be more linear.

So it's not a GTA-styled game (I'm not sure riding a horse over miles of empty plains and mountain ranges just to get to a one street town would be entertaining anyways). Regarding replay value, the game is short... an above average gamer could beat it in one Saturday; I took about a week to beat it playing it only 2 hours a day max. But after you beat it once, you unlock Bounty Mode which places extra conditions on the stages that lets you unlock cheats/powerups. Plus you can go back through the game with your souped up guns to buy/unlock any missing items/characters.

Multiplayer is 1-4 player (there are bots, can't play online). I haven't played it extensively, but basically the characters you unlock all have different starting weapons, specials, and attributes. There are three modes of play. Dueling, which works like in my first post; Deathmatch - straight forward killing; and Poker (killing people causes them to drop a card, you collect five to make a hand- different hands grant you different power ups).

Gentlemen, we need gun related content here if we want this thread to stay open. Hint. Hint.

It's a Western with "Revolver" in the title... I dunno what to say without making it contrived. Okay okay, let's see... this game features a wide range of revolvers, rifles, and shotguns known by aliases... can anyone say what their real names are (or modelled after)?

Or, let's make a list of games with gun or gun related words in the title.

Or, does anyone else playing this suddenly have a hankering to do some cowboy action shooting?

Or, how realistic is the gunplay in this and other westerns?

Or, what other gun threads are more tenuously related to guns than this one?

I dunno, I guess I just figured Western/Gunslinger/Dueling = Guns more or less... forgive my mistake.

I own RDR. It is a VERY entertaining game. Possibly the best western to come out since LucasArt's Outlaws. The guns in the game are quite fun. You have an assortment of single action revolvers, lever rifles, double barrel shotguns, fixed position Gatling guns (he actually cranks the lever!), and even a Spencer carbine. The gunplay isn't very realistic at all but the atmosphere and tone of the game make it good entertainment.

Does the game use generic models for the weapons or are they actually specific, like Colt SAA's, Winchester 1866, Schofield's, etc.?

Some games have excellent small arms - look at Combat Mission:Barbarossa to Berlin, as they have even the bayonets folded on the Russian M44s, and the stock discs on the German Mausers....The PISTOLS are even right, and this in a TANK oriented game. Sorry, off topic, whoops, not Western. sorry.

This game was supossed to be out like 2 years ago . It looks interesting . Does any one know if it is light gun capable in the released version?

The game uses lame made-up names for the weaponry. And I don't think it is light gun capable, but I could be wrong.
