Picked this up for the XBox. Despite several mediocre reviews, I'm loving this game. It's got loads of theme and style, nice story (cliche, sure, but its a western!), and it's fun to boot. The XBox version features a pretty entertaining multiplayer mode.
You play Red, half-indian bounty hunter, out to avenge the deaths of his parents. During flashbacks and side quests you get to play as some of the secondary characters like Jack Swift, English gunslinger in a bowler hat; Annie Stoaks, rifle woman and ranch owner; and Shadow Wolf, a stealthy indian warrior (plus two others).
Stages include a ranch, canyons, the town of Brimstone, the ghost town Widow's Patch, Mexican fortresses, mansions, mines, and more. You typically have one sidearm and one long gun, a full assortment of revolvers, rifles, and shotguns (even a rifle with a working bayonette).
Gameplay is a 3rd person shooter... you can (and usually) run and gun or take it slower and "tactically". Cover is a big mechanic, you lean against objects with the X-button and shoot from behind it. Some missions you have the option of using stealth. There are treats like using gatling guns or fighting from horseback. Collect bounties and buy weapons, upgrades, or unlock story/multiplayer elements. Red has a special ability called Deadeye, which is- roughly- bullet time basically... other characters have other special abilities that spice up the game.
Finally, there's a duel mechanic that's hard to explain, but basically you press down to grab your gun, press up to draw it, then fire from the hip using these timed cursors... of course you need to do it more quickly and accurately than the other guy.
Anyways, there hasn't been a good western game out in a while so I'd encourage gun gamers to at least check it out... it'll make you want to buy a lever action and watch a "Man With No Name" marathon. Anyone else playing this?
