I'm not sure of the origin of this book, which is the first of a trilogy.

The protagonist is a rather, well, liberal, UN weapons inspector who was in Africa on Z-Day... Completely unprepared for what happens, he is acquired by a Somali tribal matriarch warlord, who, as it is described, actually had the mindset to deal effectively with the walking dead. I thought that was an interesting concept right there. There is also an interesting twist on the child armies of Africa.

As put by our protagonist, he figures that even with the most evil human terrorist warlord, you can at least have a chance to buy your safety, for something. With the walking dead, you don't even have that. At my point in reading, he's coming to grips with this, and trading his "weapons negotiator" line of work for "infantry NCO." I'm probably not describing it well, but the logic works for me.

So, said warlord has HIV, needs meds, and since Africa's technology has been pretty much looted, they pile a group on a freighter, and head for the largest city in the most advanced country... Yup. New York.

At present, I'm only approximately 100 pages into it. The author is dealing fairly well with the dynamics of a conflict, but could really use a tutorial in terminal ballistics...

So far, I really like it. Already bought the other two.
