Target shooting with my .17 HMR Sako Quad Varmint yesterday and was setting up spent shotgun shells. This is one of my favorite targets especially when filled with flour. The poof on impact is very satisfying. Anyway as I walked back to the firing line an even more interesting target presented itself. Actually several. Large alagator lizards hiding in a pile of mixed wood at about 60yrds. I sat down and scanned the area with my crosshairs thinking that I might not be able to see them clearly since they were pretty well hidden. Then I picked out what looked like a head just above the rim of a 2 by 4. I wasn't certain that It was what I thought it might be but figured there was only one way to find out. Slowly I squeezed the trigger sending .17 grain hornady V-MAX at 2550 FPS. Imediately the shape that I had been aiming at dissapeared and was replaced by crimson. Direct hit! I was pleased but soon became distracted by victim number two. It met a similar demise. Sometimes a small unanticipated target can make a routine trip to the range a very distinct experience. When the time came for everyone to go out and set up targets again I found the first lizard. He was still in the same position holding onto the 4" side of the 2 by 4 on its end. Its head wasnt there anymore though. Not a trace of it. Surprised such a small target would ignite the V-Max:D
