Got my LL Bean Fall 2016 hunting catalog in the mail today.

Look at pages 6-7 (download and click on the corner of the page to turn pages)

It appears the hunter is carrying/using a Savage Model 99?

Another photo appears inside the front cover.

It's nice to see a classic old firearm being used by a major retailer in a catalog in 2016. Can you still take a deer with one of those old things?? :neener:

I love the classics, will likely use a m94 with Lyman's this year paired with a my model 66 smith and Wesson. But you can bet that you'll never see an AR in LL Bean!

I saw that too!!! A classic from a classic.

The only time I'll see that catalog is when I visit my sister. I'll look for that page.

If I get to hunt deer this year I'll use a model '94. Hope that works out this year. Last two were no-go for me.

I think it would be cool if the different catalogs tried to use the unusual rifles every chance. It would be fun to see how many you could ID as you turned pages.

Among other rifles, I use a sporterized Swedish M96 Mauser. It's one of the Kimber sporterized imports from the mid 1990s.
I have pillar bedded the action and installed a Timney trigger.
It's a tack driver.
A buddy of mine claims it's not appropriate for deer, because it was only designed as a military rifle. Never mind the fact that it far outshoots his Ruger 77 all day long.
Never mind the competition and sniper versions of this rifle.
Never mind the fact that nearly all bolt action sporting centerfire rifles are either copies of a 98 Mauser or derived from it, a sporterized Mauser is not "appropriate" for hunting deer.

Either way, it's great to see the classics both in firearms and some of the styles they are bringing out in clothing. Makes me want to order some up and see how they perform.

LL Bean is coming out with a new line, LL Tactical, that will feature Level 3 Oxford shirt body armor and cedar-scented combat knee pads.

Savage 99 in 300 Savage is my preferred hunting rifle. My Dad, and now myself, have taken more deer with that rifle then I can remember. Classic.

And for a good day walking around Freeport, ME and visiting the LL Bean stores cannot be beat. Plus Buck's Naked BBQ has some really good eats!!!

I've never liked the Savage 99, but take one apart and you will never see better workmanship. As a kid (in the 50's) my dad paid for his shooting supplies by mounting scopes for a local sporting goods store, so I got to see about everything that was around at the time, and there was none better made than a Savage 99.
