Load workup targets?

Depends on what I am shooting, what sights and what distance. Sometimes it’s just a dot on a piece of paper, other times just a steel plate and a rattle can.

223rem shooting for accuracy with 6-18 vortex scope if that helps anyone.

If you just cut perfect holes of 2". 4" and 6" in the backer board you don't need targets. Just shoot through the hole! If you miss it will then show on the backer board

Saves lots of putting up targets and wasted paper:rofl:

The one in my avatar. Redfield-type precision sight-it target. National Target has them.

I'm with Entropy on this one. Same ones I use most often for a scoped rifle. I'm not the greatest rifle marksman in the world, so that target, hung perfectly level, will help me be very consistent with the rifle's level.

Will also make a slightly canted scope very evident (and I've mounted plenty I was *sure* were dead nuts level at the house only to realize at range I was off a bit). Hitting the 4 corners will also highlight any bad habits on the bench like being inconsistent with the front bag or whatever I happen to be doing wrong that day.....

I do like the smaller dot stickers for pistols.

I dislike any type of shoot-n-see. Not in general - for just plinking I like them a lot - but if I'm trying to be precise I hate them. I will tend to try to follow the last shot, not where I should be aiming. No idea why, I know I do it, and still have to focus a lot not to. Yet if I were shooting a 308 @ 100 where I could easily see the holes on a standard paper target, I will aim where I should 100%. For some reason a shoot-n-see gives me some type of ADD flare up and I want to shoot at each new splotch that shows up on the target :)

Also just as a note, I like the medium blue color B29 silhouette for a red dot like an Aimpoint, or Romeo 5. Anything else it seems the dot obscures the aiming spot or I'm not confident I'm on the exact same spot on the target. But the B29 is just right and easy to see you're centered with the blue all the way around. Not that anyone would do a load work up with that type optic, but just for general sighting one in.....

I like the 1" round or square orange stickers.
On the round, i put the crosshairs on the bottom of the circle.
I do commercial building maintenance, and when a tenant moves out of an office, you'd be surprised what they leave behind that's useful for targets. Haven't paid for target material in 15 years

For handgun load testing I use National Target style TQ-2, which is really an NRA 75 foot smallbore target. They work very good at 10-50 feet. They are on 4x6" sheets which makes them very easy to keep on file after the shooting is over. You can buy a pack of 1000 very inexpensively.

I simply transfer the tape label from the ammo box to the target after shooting and it's all fully documented that way with no additional work required.

I made my own target with blanks for all the load data.

Now not being funny here guys...How do you know your holding the crosshairs in the exact same place as you did for each round? I find that hard to do with the circle targets or just drawn dots like @crestoncowboy has pictured. I could go from shooting a 5 round group with 2 in the same hole to others not part of that group and I feel its because I have nothing to "line" the crosshairs up with.

What you do is put the center of the crosshairs in the middle of the dot. I can't see it's that hard.

I'm playing with different powders and bullets and in need of more targets. What's your favorite style target for this? I currently use the 2'' shoot n c circle targets but they are sometimes hard to split in half and shoot tight groups. I am looking at these but not sure if they are what I need? I figure the triangles would help split the middle.

I get those exact targets and love em

For sighting in my 223 @ 100 yards I use the target I created in MS Word. The diamonds are 1/2" sq with a 1" grid on 11 x 17 paper, but could be adapted to 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper. With the square turn so it is a diamond you have a better aiming point for the crosshairs.

i don't have much money, the only targets i buy are the ones from midway, they will have them in the free shipping area. most time they are burris targets, nice ones to. there like 4 bucks for 10 or 12 and they will make your order free shipping. my favorite targets are the big stack of menus they have on the chinese food counters. and a lot of paper plates.

My go to also and only use the diamond spots on them. When they decided $50 or more for free shipping on just the targets I quit ordering them. I used to order a box of bullets and pack of targets. Since they make it $50+ I haven’t ordered from midway and now pay a buck or two more at the gun shop.

At 100 yds, I'll confess to using well over a thousand of the Birchwood Casey 1 inch Target Spots in the last few years.
I will buy more, but have another 8-900 to burn through first.

Have also used a 'Jumbo Sharpie', a straight edge, and 3/4" round 'price sticker's:

I always use the Redfield sight in targets, 4, 4 inch diamond bulls and one large center bull. GREAT for sighting in rifle scopes or shooting groups. around 25 bucks a 100 where I buy them. hdbiker

I use them also and believe it or not I can shoot tighter on a 2” shoot n c because I have something to actually aim at.
