I am looking at getting a Ruger 77/44 in the near future. I have a question that is a bit specific to the Ruger bolt action carbine.

I was looking at this thread, here at THR, and I noticed something that I didn't know before. In particular, it relates to the different SAAMI specs for 44 mag pistol and 44 mag rifle.

Diameter for Revolver/Pistol is spec'ed at .429" Groove / .417" Bore
Diameter for Rifle is spec'ed at .431" Groove / .424" Bore

2 Seperate PDF's under SAAMI/ANSI Standards at this page:
http://saami.org/specifications_and_information/index.cfm
Page 130 for handgun, and page 197 for rifle...

Here is my question, is the Ruger carbine barrel made to rifle or pistol specs?

To rifle. Has nuttin' to do with how you load the cartridge tho, other than diameter of lead bullets(which you have to do when reloading for revolvers too). I shoot the same loads in my 77/44 that I do in my 629s. What's accurate in one works just as well in the other. But I only use jacketed bullets.

I have a Puma in 44 Magnum and I found it to be inaccurate and often leaded the barrel when I use my handgun loads (4 other 44 Magnums). I discovered the difference when I slugged the barrel and found the groove diameter to be .432"+ (still in SAAMI tolerance of .431"). I sized my Puma bullets to .433"-.434" and they now work fine. For jacketed bullets of .429" I never had any noticeable problems (but I've fired less than 100 jacketed bullets through any of my 44 Magnums in at least 15 years)...

I have and load for the a 77/44 and have always used the same loads for the carbine as I do with my revolvers with good success. One thing I have noticed is that the magazines on the carbine have issue with some of the heavier 280-300 grain bullets I load because the OAL is too long for the magazine to feed correctly when loaded with more than one cartridge... actually had to disassemble a mag to get the cartridge out.
