Here are my selections for the Long Range and MBR in .308 Win / 7.62mm Nato. I call it my poor man's choice. I got the LR .308 in late 2007 ($1034) and the TAC 20 ($1002) on Dec. 30th, 2008.
With the prices today, none of them are poor man's choices. I remember buying DPMS .308 magazines for $25 and Magpul magazines for $10 each OTD at a gun show in mid to late 2008.
How times have changed.
I still believe that for the rest of us who can no longer afford the M1As and KACs, and POFs in .308, the LR .308 is still a viable choice. I would also look at the rifles from Fulton Armory; they use the DPMS platform for their builds using Krieger stainless steel barrels.
If you already have a DPMS .308 lower you can get uppers in .308 and 6.5 Creedmoor (26" barrel for really long range shooting).
The 20" TAC 20 version is a really optimal barrel length for the .308/7.62 caliber.
