Long Range Rifle/Scope/PRS question(s)

13.5 pounds (scale rounds to the nearest .5) on the bathroom scale with no brake, no mag, and no ammo.

Thanks, we have some bad weather coming in Sat, plus I have some work I need to do, so we'll see. Anxious to put a few rounds downrange though.

That would be killing me. I'd be playing hooky from work today

I weighed my dasher the other day.... 22.3lbs ‍♀️
Sure is easy to shoot positional. But I dang sure wouldn’t bring it to mammoth lol

... and no bipod?

@Walkalong , that setup looks great and it's not too heavy. I'll weigh my AI AW with the Premier scope, SilencerCo suppressor and an empty magazine. I bet it's up around 20lb. I plan to bore sight the Premier tomorrow and shoot a few groups of factory ammunition at some AI coasters that I was sent recently. I'm going to check out the Havak at the SHOT show next week. I hope you get to shoot it and post some results which I expect will be really good given that setup and cartridge. I'm interested in your thoughts on feeding, extraction, ejection, the trigger etc. since those are all important things to get right in a rifle.

the trigger
It's ok, trigger shoe is too wide for my taste and I have to stretch a hair to get my finger on it just right, break is ok but not overly predictable, and I like predictable. I do not know what weight it is adjusted for right now. Not real light, not real heavy. FN-SPR trigger is nicer. Crisp and very predictable.

I would not choose the lug setup the Havok has, but I'm sure it works well. If I was CNCing an action the bottom would be flat, rail built in. Plenty of rifles with round bottom actions and rails bolted on that shoot just fine though.

The trigger was the first thing I changed. It’s just a Timney 510. I know a million deer hunters love them, and they are better than a terrible factory Remington trigger, but they make me want to punch kittens. Terrible for a competition rifle.

Impact sells Jewel HVR’s for $200...

My Bench gun has a 2 ounce Jewel. Do you prefer the Jewel or the TriggerTech? Won't happen right away, but down the road....

Got it put together, forgot about the brake before taking a couple of pics. Just use your imagination. With the Seekins low rings there is just enough room for the scope cover, a bit higher rings would be fine and give a bit more heads up position. Seekins said they all use the low for up to 50 (Maybe 56?) MM objectives, and as far as fit to the rifle it is perfect.

Love it, I really want to try a KRG Bravo on my next rifle!

I’m only a year into a TriggerTech, but have had a bunch of Jewel’s for many moons...

What I do know - Jewel’s will go down in dusty/dirty games. TriggerTech’s are less susceptible. So objectively, my latest three triggers have been TriggerTech Diamonds, even despite higher price than Jewels, and despite my long standing love affair with the Jewels. Switching over to straight shoe as well, and really liking it. But it’s almost a coin flip to me. My Havak has a Jewel, and a spare in the kit. I intend to leave it that way this season too. My Defiance Dasher has a straight shoe Diamond.

Maybe the red is sexier?

Thanks, seems I'm the lightweight around here. :D

And all bets are off on shooting this weekend, wife went to ER with a kidney stone yesterday morning. Resting comfortably right now waiting on the (behind schedule) doctor. (Doctor Bhuta the urologist) Stone is low enough to laser today. He is a great guy and a very good doctor, but is getting older and finding new urologists isn't easy. Hospital has sure been looking.

I weighed my rifle earlier, 15lbs 13oz,

American rifle company Mausingfield, krg X-ray chassis, spigot mount, arc rings and a vortex gen ii razor 3-18, bipod is a ckye-pod
Barrel is a 24” rem varmint contour K&P 1-10” twist chambered in the old outdated 308 Winchester

@Walkalong I hope your wife feels better, shooting can wait

Rain is coming back in tomorrow so despite the damp and the wind I took it out, bore sighted it the old fashioned way to get it on paper at 100 (Near perfect horizontally and a little high vertically), walked it to the center and shot a couple of groups. Nothing special, but it did go bang. Forgot the mag and had to single feed it. *sigh* :)

Put together a pack for matches. Keep mags and ammo in it. Leave your bolt in your rifle lol. Then you only need to remember your rifle and pack.

I normally leave a mag in all rifles with detachable mags, just didn't check.

I shot a PRS stage without a mag. the stage required all ammo to be at a table behind the shooter so you had to get into position, fire the shot, run back and grab one round, and load/repeat.

I went to load the first round after the clock started and realized i didn't have a magazine. . . .I still got off 9 shots in 90 seconds. . .

lol i hate those stages. there was a 25 round stage like that at rifles only years ago. ammo was more than 10 yards away. so it was like 450+ yards worth of suicides

I did that once, drove 45 minutes with only one gun, and no bolt. Just sighed, packed up, and left. One of the very few times I have ever gone to the range with only one gun.

Ar15, brought everything except the buffer and spring. They really don't operate well without those items :( Gun was clean though, gleaming :)

How tight should the action screws be on the Havak? I can't seem to find a recommendation. I am disappointed in the way the stock is done, the metal "chassis" seems OK, but the plastic is two pieces and not particularly well done in the way the rear piece attaches IMHO. I want to shoot it some more and it would be a good day if I wasn't on call. Murphy's law says they will call me just as soon as I get started on some serious, vs playing around, shooting.

First time out it didn't shoot much better than 3/4" for 5 shots at 100 yards and worse than that the point of impact shifted down after the first group. Next two 5 shot groups were the same size, but down nearly an inch.

Groups were round at least. :)

I have my KRG X-ray torqued to 50”lbs

Just remember, the first 100rds or so the barrel will change and speed up, poi shifts are not terribly odd imo during the initial shooting, my 308 did something similar, and then depending on how I drive the gun I get a little poi shift depending on bipod load, the aluminum backbone is solid, but it will flex a little if you overload the bipod, you can’t load the bipod as strongly with the krg as you can with a manners, but you need some load for consistency

While the krg bravo is not a manners or McMillan by any stretch, do you find the any of the function poor or is it an aesthetic/feel issue? Curious, for $350 it is the best priced chassis out there, but it is not rich in features or design, kind of a “good enough” chassis

I am (Have to be) willing to write it off as a new setup anomaly, assuming it settles down, and I think it will, but I still think the two piece plastic part is a poor design. It could have just as easily been a one piece that would have been better for no more money. Aesthetics are one thing, and design is another.

It's only one load tried, and in calmer/better conditions it may well do better. Not to mention it is completely new to me, I haven't tried to shoot any tiny groups in awhile, and I was rushing things a little to beat the dark.
