Long Slide 10mm S&W - Competition or Hunting?

I don't like or appreciate the compensator, the trigger dingus, the thumb safety, the tall sights (is the barrel threaded?), but the price ain't bad. I don't hunt much anymore, but if I still did, I'd take it on pig hunts.

Would be a good hunting/woods gun but 10mm is not much of a competition round. Too much recoil and too expensive to run for most of the sports like IDPA or USPSA. The porting would bump you to ESP division in IDPA and Open division in USPSA where that gun would struggle to be competitive.

I have the same pistol in the 4" compact version. I don't think they offer that barrel length anymore. It is quite accurate. For my uses the long barrel wouldn't be something I'm interested in. If I'm hunting with a handgun, I'd rather have a long-barreled magnum revolver. I need something much more compact. But I suppose if you want to hunt with a 10mm it would be a good choice.

The tall sights are so you can co-witness through an optic, which I may go to someday. The trigger on mine is light enough that I'd not want it without a safety, it's very 1911 ish. Plus, mine is my dedicated hiking/camping pistol. I had a G29 that I liked a lot but could never get comfortable having a loaded chamber with the gun in my sleeping bag at night. I made the switch to the M&P to get a safety. I wouldn't want the compensator for my uses, but the trigger safety is a non-issue for me.

Overall I think Smith has a winner with this one.

In order of favorite to least favorite:
1)Longshot- Most velocity w/ least pressure
Low flash too. Meters better than BD. Hands down best 10mm powder in the world, and anyone who's uses LS tends to agree with this.

2)Blue Dot- A close second to LS but spikey in pressure. Lots of flash. Meters like corn flakes. But I still love it anyways cuz, well it's a bstrd. stepchild of a powder.

3)Power Pistol- Most accurate mid range load, can't go wrong, but not Most velocity.
Meters real good. Uses least powder. Very solid.

4)AA#9- Meh, uses a lot of powder, and velocities much less than LS or BD by 100fps or more. Accuracy fine, but no reason to use it with these other 3 better powders available. I save AA#9 for magnum wheelguns. I do know that AA#9 may be more readily available these days than the above 3, so perhaps that's why it's popular.
But AA#9 has no advantage to offer over the others.

Trade in for a .41 Magnum. That’s how I’d use it.
If you can find a .41 Magnum…..
