Hi everyone, I'd like to introduce myself.

I'm a college student studying psychology and art, in Williamsburg VA. Some of you may know me from Bladeforums or the USN, though I have changed my handle for THR.

I am 20, and do not yet own any firearms. My parents are strong anti's (it took me years to get them to vaguely accept my knife collecting/carrying!). I first shot shotguns in Boy Scouts, then at gun shows in Colorado and Texas (I lived in CO for 6 years). I tried Army ROTC for a year but found it was not for me - I learned a lot though and had a blast.

I go shooting semi-regularly with friends, mostly rifles and shotguns but every once in a while some handgun action. :)

Welcome, Undertoad! Pull up a chair and set a while!

Uh, but don't set as long as Skunk does. As you can see by his post count, HE'S OBVIOUSLY GOT NOTHING BETTER TO DO AND THAT'S THE ONLY REASON HE WAS ABLE TO SAY HI FIRST AND IT DOESN'T COUNT BECAUSE HE'S GOT A RODENT NAME!!!!

:neener:

:D

Well, welcome anyway. ;)

Welcome to THR !

Thinking Pavlov...how about evertime an anti comment is made you flash a pic of Mike Moore, or Rosie O'D, shouldn't take long for the comments to stop...:D

Oh, we'll prolly call you "Toad", we don't have a Toad yet...got a "Skunk" tho'...its a compliment...saves typing...:)

Psych & Art Major

Sounds like me 30 years ago....that's where you meet the coolest ladies...with a gun(I know the rules!). Welcome!

Well hello there. Now watch everyone jump over each other to give you recommendations on your first gun purchase.

Welcome Undertoad!

Alot of interesting people here and alot of opinions! But we are all gunner's with experiences and preferences...so do not hold it against us!!
I'll spare you the gun recommendations.......I tend to run off at the fingers! LOL Though I must say Readyonthe Right had three Classic's on his list, guns that will last you forever!!
Good shooting!

Undertoad -

Welcome to THR! I think you'll enjoy it here.

Oh, and for ReadyontheRight - you must beware the Undertoad per "The World According to Garp".

Welcome. And RotR beat me to it verbatim..
Oh well.ALl that matters is that your part of the family now.

RTFM

Wow!

Thanks for all the welcomes folks, I feel at home already! :)

As I alluded to, I've been using the archives as a resource for about a year... TFL archives too. So I'm pretty sure I know my first firearm will be a Bersa Thunder .380. ;) I wan something CCW-able (6 months til I can get my permit!) and inexpensive but still good quality. Now for the real question - second gun - .45ACP or 9mm??? (just kidding! :D )

ReadyontheRight and whitebear - bravo for the Irving! :)

hansolo - Actually I'm an art minor but I still get to meet all the interesting women! ;) I was going to double major but I can graduate a semester early if I minor (and take a less stressful courseload also!)

Undertoad -

Interesting combination of degrees - I majored in Psychology, and minored in Philosophy and German. Had great fun and met many interesting and challenging women.

Went back and got an MBA so I could find work... :D This was back in the early '80s.

Undertoad,
Are you at William and Mary?
There are plenty of shooters in the area, me among them. I'd be happy to let you shoot a Makarov or a PA-63 one of these days when I'm not swamped cleaning up after a hurricane. I use either for CCW. Both are inexpensive and reliable.
Join the VCDL (Virginia Citizen's Defense League) if you haven't already. The group does good work and you meed all sorts of folks who have like interests in firearms. It sounds like a militia group but what we really do is bug the daylights out of the legislature on 2nd Amendment issues.

.45 or 9mm???

Yup. You're a regular already. You know the inside jokes.

Glad you're with us. We look forward to hearing more from us. When you go shooting with your buds, and shoot something fun, be sure and give us a range report. We love range reports.

I should have been a psych major. It's 70% women, 29% men and 1% other.

That's what happens when I'm too tactical (for you, hkmp5sd) and not strategic enough, as Gus would say :banghead:

Thanks again for the welcomes folks. Looking forward to writing up some range reports...I haven't been able to go shooting for a few months and I'm kind of jonesing here! ;)

Apple a day - Yes sir, I go to W&M. The VCDL sounds vaguely familiar, I think I've seen their website. I will look into it! The Mak was my original interest as a CCW gun but a friend had all but talked me out of it. I'd be glad to meet you sometime and go shooting. :)

Welcome UToad

Why would a friend try and talk you out of anything?

A REAL friend would tell you to get both :D the Mak and then whatever you NEEDED next... the Bersa is a fine little carry piece, but the Mak is... a fine little carry piece albeit kinda heavy when compared to the Bersa.

As to the 9mm or the .45... you know you need both eventually what with one being cheaper to feed and the other making bigger holes.
But not to worry, you're still young and have plenty of time to buy what you need unless you plan on moving to MA, MD, NY, NJ, IL or CA after graduation.

And a .22, don't forget a .22

Welcome again, post often and early.

Adios

Hi. No shortage of cool sites to visit in your area. Fort Monroe at the tip of the Yorktown Peninsula. Yorktown Colonial Park & battlefield. Dam No. 1, Fort Magruder, Drewy's Bluff, Malvern Hills, Gaines Mills, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, City Point, Richmond (Virginia State Library, Museum of the Confederacy, Virginia Historical Society, Monument Blvd., Tredegar Iron Works, Chimborazo Medical Museum), Bermuda 100, Colonial Williamsburg, Five Forks, etc. Enjoy them now while you're in the area. After college, you may never return.

Of course, in Williamsburg, there's the Peking Restaurant Buffet. My favorite place to eat at Billsburg.
