Longish Range Handgun

Unfortunately that doesn’t meet my requirement for a common caliber. 357, 45, 9, 40, 10, 44, etc.

I have been looking into the Glock 40 in 10mm. It’s a horse, but given the recent increase in popularity of 10 mm, that would meet my stipulations: common caliber, standard handgun action (auto or revolver), and a reloadable cartridge. I would also prefer to stick with iron sights but that might be changing. I held a Glock 40 and it felt like it would potentially be pretty unpleasant in a cartridge like 10mm.

Seating the bullet .125" further out of the Magnum case will duplicate the .360 DW. The 180gr Hornady XTP does almost the same thing with the bullet seated to the lower cannelure.

Would a Walter PPQ Q5 Match cover this category? There is one available locally with optics slot from the factory.

I may have to let this go. After today I don’t have any business shooting past 25 yards. It was depressing. I’ve been neglecting my pistol shooting and putting a lot of rounds through my 223 rifle trying to meet my goal of hitting a clay bird at 200 with carry handle sights. It was pretty obvious I need to shoot more pistol after today. I can’t imagine what my shotgun shooting would look like. I haven’t shot it in over a year.

@DMW1116
Absolutely should be able to especially with a red dot attached.

But that’s good to know. It’s a really nice pistol in a caliber I already reload. I’ve not used a red dot on a pistol and don’t actually have one on any rifles right now either. Are there any that would be under $200 and appropriate for my S&W Victory to try one?

Grab a target style 22LR pistol - a Ruger Mark Series, S&W Victory, or Beretta Neos - and go to work. There’s no better way to accelerate pistol shooting skills than with a target style 22LR.

I have a Victory. I was doing ok there for a bit but I did not do that well last time. Some odd fliers high and left off hand at 10 yards.

Maybe. I’ve been using a box of Winchester M22. It’s almost gone though. I hope to switch to some S&B target standard velocity if I can find some more.

sounds like you are squeezing the grip harder as you are pulling the trigger. constant firm grip all the way through the shooting process is best, imo.

My skill aside, I’m exploring single action 45 revolvers, specifically a Ruger Blackhawk. The 7.5” barrel is appealing for the increased sight radius. However it seems like a lot to be hanging off the end of the gun. It helps they don’t have an under lug like the GP100 so maybe it’s not as bad as I think.

7.5” Blackhawks, especially in 45 Colt, balance much better than a long barreled full lug DA. More mass in the ass with a full sized, exposed grip frame, larger frame, and a relatively thin and light pipe out front. Especially the blued models with aluminum ejector housing.

The 45 Colt/45 ACP convertible seems like a good plan, assuming they’re available.

I snagged a Blackhawk in 357 in used condition. The guy said it came into the store as part of a collection. Seems pretty good but I won’t get to try it until the weekend. I bought some primed brass but it’s all filled with powder and bullets. I’ll try to empty some so I can reload it.

I zeroed the sights at 10 yards and put 3 cylinders through it. I was shooting Fiochi target ammo so recoil was not a problem. It seems to be as accurate as I can shoot it. The last 2 shots hit the center black diamond from 10 yards. I did some off hand shooting at first but zeroing was off a rest. It was a little low and a shade right. Now the bullets hit right on top of the front sight. I also marked the front sight with orange paint, but not until after it was zeroed. I’ll stretch it out later after I find some more ammo.

I may have to let this go.
when i go without shooting for more than a few months, it takes at least 200 rounds down range to get my form back. note: the first thing to go and the last thing to come back is follow-through. dry fire practice helps get things back quicker, but i still have to put in the time to get back in the groove.

a pinky finger under the grip lines my sights up every time i pull up my blackhawk. note: keep all the screws tight. a loose ejector rod screw will throw shots all over @ 25 yards.

my blackhawks are accurate out to a quarter mile with certain loads.

That’s encouraging. To get the kind of accuracy I want I expect I’ll have to hand load for it. At least that’s how it worked for my rifles and hand loading was part of the original criteria.

I’ll be on the lookout for some more range ammo too. This load seems accurate. I’m sure the wandering shots were me, especially after seeing how I dipped the muzzle on the 7th shot from the 6-shot cylinder.

The trick will be finding brass and primers. There isn’t a lot of 357 or even 38 brass laying around the range. On the other hand it’s easier to keep up with from a revolver and no one is chasing it down in the grass or off the concrete.

i loaded up some 140 gn. xtps for my shooting friend for a long range shoot. four of us went. a 2 liter bottle was set at 444 yards (my laser rangefinder approved) and we all took a couple dozen shots. my friend shooting the 140 xtps did the best with three shots within six inches of the 2 liter. he was shooting an old model vaquero.
