Issue: S.F. GUN BAN BALLOT MEASURE (SF Board of Supervisors)

Description: Would ban the possession of handguns and the sale, manufacture and transfer of all firearms and ammunition in the city and county of San Francisco.

Latest Info: 11/06/2005 - National Black Newspaper of the Year 'SF Bay View' Opposes Proposition H - "...I’m recommending that you vote No on Prop H, the handgun ban. On most issues, I agree with its sponsor, Supervisor Chris Daly, but we part company this time..." - Willie Ratcliff, SFBayView.com editor

11/03/2005 - SF-Frontlines Opposes Proposition H - "...This bill will mainly send handguns underground, making it harder to regulate them. People who plan on using guns for illegal purposes aren’t going to worry much about this law..."

11/02/2005 - SF Examiner Opposes Proposition H - "...Prop. H would not be an effective or appropriate means of preventing violent crime. These difficulties should be addressed by better enforcement of existing laws and better regulation of firearms - not a blanket ban, particularly one that affects such a small geographical area and is likely to be challenged in court as a violation of state law. In addition, it is possible that once residents gave up their handguns, San Francisco would be seen as an easy hunting ground for criminals who have no intention of giving up their own pistols. Voters should turn down this proposition..."

10/30/2005 - SF Chronicle Opposes Proposition H - "...This measure would prohibit city residents from owning handguns. The need to curtail the proliferation of handguns on the streets is a debate worth having, but at the state level. State law is pretty clear that such regulation is the Legislature's domain. Passage of H is unlikely to produce anything more than litigation. But even if it were to prevail in court, this one-city ban would be so impractical and widely defied that it would be meaningless..."

10/21/2005 - AEAA: Prop H Gun Ban Would Prohibit Action Films in San Francisco - "...'If this law passes. those TV, film and theater productions [that involve firearms] cannot be done in San Francisco. Films and TV shows like Dirty Harry, Magnum Force, James Bond, A View To A Kill, The Presidio, Bullitt, 48 Hours, The Rock, Basic Instinct, and The Streets of San Francisco could not be made. While the entertainment industry struggles to keep productions in the United States, and cities like Los Angeles and New York are actively courting film production business, it is unfortunate that certain San Francisco politicians have carelessly proposed such a drastic anti-entertainment industry scheme..."

10/12/2005 - SF Police Officer's Association (POA) Opposes Proposition H! - "...After careful review and analysis, the POA does not support the proposed ballot initiative that would nullify the personal choice of city residents to lawfully possess a handgun for selfdefense purposes..." - SFPOA

On November 8, San Francisco voters will decide if the rights that all Americans value - the right to privacy, the right to be safe in our homes and neighborhoods, the right to have personal property protected from confiscation, and the Right to Keep and Bear Arms - will be secured or surrendered.

Action needed: 1. Visit StopSanFranBan.com
2. Spread the word
3. VOTE NO ON PROP H

It looks like most of the ultra liberal rags in San Francisco oppose the handgun ban.

Very strange.

What are the odds those nice rich elitist editors have handguns, and perhaps like Dianne, carry permits?

*blink* *blink*

Ok. Give me a couple more minutes to wake up here. I could have sworn I just read something in the Examiner that implies criminals wouldn't bother to obey the laws.

Zero. There are only ten permits in SF. That's probably just enough to cover a few judges and prosecutors.

They're all saying "no on H" because it's so patently stupid that it rises to a level of stupidity high enough that even liberals can see it's stupid. SF is a tiny place with no gun stores (AFAIK). What possible good could it do to outlaw handguns in a place that's roughly 50 square miles, when there are plenty of big gun stores in Oakland and surrounding areas? I think even liberals are getting tired of gun control. The CCW reform movement, and the sunset of the AWB, have provided solid proof that gun control doesn't do a thing about crime. I know plenty of gun rights supporters in SF, people who are liberals, people who voted for Tom Amiano, a SOCIALIST. Yes, Tom Amiano is not a liberal, he is a Socialist. And some of his supporters own guns and support gun rights. I know this for a fact. So SF is not quite the place you may think it is on gun rights.

Holy crap, guys! Our message may be sinking in!

Does anyone else feel like they've been sucked into some Alice in Wonderland mirror world? Since when do people from SF perform cost-benefit analysis instead of referring to their edition of The Complete Noam Chomsky for an opinion?

I'm enjoying this but I have this funny feeling I should keep my guns ready and loaded for Jabberwocky.

Not according to this pc from the Cron..>
Gun control advocates view Prop.H as a natural extension of a national movement to regulate gun ownership. Sue Ann Schiff, executive director of San Francisco's Legal Community Against Gun Violence, said the measure came after the expiration of the national assault weapons ban, and a bill passed by Congress immunizing gun manufacturers from lawsuits by victims of gun violence

Watch out for what you wish for. You might get it. Looks like they suddenly looked and decided that pro gun folks might have been telling the truth about
"when guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns". Some source reasons cited exactly that. Wake up call, woke some folks up.:neener: :neener:

I think even liberals are getting tired of gun control.

I've started to believe this myself. Gun control issues cost the libs quite a few voters. This very forum (Legal and Political) is proof enough that in many cases, gun rights is the single issue that puts people into the conservative camp, at least from a voting perspective.

I've seen countless threads containing heated arguments (most ending up locked) between forum members that are completely politically opposed, with 2A rights as, literally, their only common ground.

I think the libs are just getting tired of gun control costing them votes. They're starting to decide that they'd rather have the votes than do away with "the evils of guns."

Many liberals never believed in gun control to begin with.

I have known some freaking hard core leftists that are deathly afraid of their guns being taken away.

However, this does not stop them from voting for Kerry, Feinstein, Shumer, Boxer Kennedy etc...

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

I don't know whats happening in Frisco but no doubt these news rags will keep supporting the fools that advocate victim disarmament even though they themselves strongly oppose the idea.

I have a friend who is a Canadian Jew, lives in LA, works in the entertainment biz, got his US citizenship specifically for the purpose of voting against Bush, AND is a gun nut. You can't get any more liberal than this guy, and he agrees with everyone here on the RKBA.

I keep on saying it: gun rights have nothing to do with liberal vs. conservative and the bozos who are currently running the Dems are going to have to abandon the Brady Bunch if they ever want to get back in power.

One of the fundamental reasons for this is that shooting is a fun activity which millions of people enjoy. Trying to ban guns isn't really fun, isn't a hobby or an activity. There's a reason to go out and shoot guns (it's fun) and the politics come with it. The same is not true with banning guns. The only people into the banning thing are people motivated by controlling other people and people who are motivated by fear. None of these are as strong of motivations as the desire to have fun, exercise freedom, and collect expensive toys.

Well said

Read the quotes. They are against it because it'd also ban the movie prop guns, and should be done at the State level instead! where I'm sure the appropreate exemption for Hollywood would be included.

Don't get caught in wishful thinking and let your gaurd down.

Yep.

This hurts Hollyweird shows like Monk set in San Fran.

So the elites oppose it.

Where is Sean Penn on this?

He lives next door in Marin Co

It looks like the gun ban bill will pass by a wide margin. Even if some liberals in the city are openly against this bill, because it makes no sense, most do support its passing. And nothing will convince, the majority of the people to ever become pro-gun.

On the side, I do know a few pro-2nd Ad Liberals, one even was in the Army. But, most liberals in Mass are very anti-gun with no affinty for gun owners.

I doubt it will pass.

Most people in San Fran prolly think all guns are banned in CA anyway

You have to admit, though, that some, femaledogs, do get their kicks from taking away other people's fun. In the 1920's some went around with a bible in one hand and a hatchet in another, and walked into people's bars to destroy them!

Those people got what they wanted, and for 12 years or so liquor was outlawed.

Now their grandchildren have picked up the torch. But instead of having to physically harm anyone, they can pass a law making you defenceless against criminals, and the criminal harms you. And then the criminal's act is used as further justification of the need for even more of their prohibition laws.

Anyone else catch the O'Reily factor today? Bill was talking to some women who was for the handgun ban. They show some machineguns while they talk though:barf: . Even so I felt Bill did a good job, saying he was for the 2nd Amendment and even more so after witnessing the aftermath of hurricane Katrina.

He voiced some of my concerns to the women. Telling her she has protection and lives in a nice neighborhood. Women ignored him though and said the usual spiel guns are evil blah blah blah.

This was the first time I ever truly got pissed and started yelling at the tv. Ha! I feel like my old man now. Certainly did suprise my mother. Another thing I found pretty funny was when they wrapped it up Bill said to get a rifle! and then it cuts to commercial pretty fast.[/LEFT]
