looking for a accurate rimfire

An old deer hunting buddy said he hunts deer with a 22 LR and had it sighted in at 100 yds. I smirked at him so he challenged me. We picked out a pine cone about 75 yds off and he knocked a couple off. I tried it and now I am a believer also. His deer hunting rifle is a beat up Glenfield that is uglier than spit. But, that thing shoots good. Now my Ruger 10/22 and bolt are both zeroed at 100 yds. Do not discount that lowly 22 RF or the Rugers. There is the story of a North Carolina gent who hunted bears with a 22 and a little dog. The dog would run up to the bear and when it stood up he would shoot it right in the white spot on his chest. I do not recommend hunting any larger animal with a 22 but one does what one has to sometimes.

wel I didnt find too many rimfires today at the shop. I found one Savage 17 with scope and bipod for $350 i believe, used. I just couldnt get myself to buy it for some reason. Part of the reason was a good deal they had on a Mossberg 930 tactical for $350 too. Then went to another store and they had new 590A1 with ghost rings for like $430. Decided to spend more time researching and deciding what i really want.

Something that no one is mentioning is that a 17HMR can't shoot 17Mach2. A 22LR can shoot 22 Long or Short. A 22WMR can shoot 22WRF for similar ballistics to the 22 LR, therefore you can eat what you shoot with your 22 WMR rifle. I just see the attraction to a 17 for hunting, but then you said you were getting rid of pests didn't you?

Two words, one hyphenated.

1. Savage.

2. Accu-trigger.

Every time I shoot it I'm reminded of the money wasted on my "target" 10/22.

Consider a cz-452, excellent accuracy, great craftsmanship.

I have a CZ 452 Varmint in 17HMR. While I own several .22LR and .22WMRs the little .17 is by and far the better shooting gun out past 100 yards. At about 150 I break out my CZ 527 in .223. CZ makes a fine rifle regardless the caliber rimfire you decide to go with. The 453 comes with a single set trigger which s a lot of fun on the bench. My 452 has a Timney trigger set just under 3 lbs.

Savage Mark II heavy barrel.

It's a sub 1/2" rifle at 50 yards. My best 5 shot groups are 0.3"

I've shot 3 shot cloverleaves that look like oblong holes, and I believe the rifle is capable of 0.2" groups.
