I'm a big gun enthusisiast I've been shooting for many years and been looking to buy a new compact 40. Safety is a big issue for me as well as durability . I've been looking at the Springfield xd 40 compact, the ruger src40, and the glock compact 40. I'm Hoping to get feedback on all three pistols.. I love the safety features of the ruger, Im absolutely crazy about the smoothness and feel of the Springfield, but I know that glock is hard to beat when it comes to durability..

What are y'alls opinions on theses three pistols? What would you prefer? I'm looking for something I can do a bit of shooting with, but then have the option of carrying it and concealing it comfortablely..

Thanks!

I own all three. Of the three I like the Glock the best because it has been reliable with every type of ammunition I've used. It has sent every shot downrange over the past 5 years of fairly heavy use. That being said I'm sure any of the three would be "fine" if fine is the goal.

I've had a XD40sc and a G27 and I think the Glock is the better gun. Both were reliable so you can scratch that off the list. The Glock has the better trigger IMO(and Glock triggers aren't great). XD triggers are just mushy, I can't really explain it but I don't like them. On top of that the Glock is 6 ounces lighter which is certainly noticeable when carrying.

I've owned a G23 and an M&P 40c. Much preferred the M&P friendliness for shooting. Both are gone and I have a G36 and an M&P45 for off duty carry.

Don't rule out the M&P 40c, I have one and love it.

My suggestion is to go to a range where you can rent them and see which one YOU like the best.

I have the Glock and am quite happy with it, but I like the XD line a lot too (have an XD45 service). If I didn't already have the Glock when the XD subcompacts came out, I probably would have gone with the XD40.

all of the above are EXELENT weapons!but you can get a Bersa thunder 40 compact carry for about a third of the price of Glock,XD or most others.

I had an XD40 subcompact I carried for a while, it never skipped a beat though it had a bit of a snap too it! I guess you're looking at the one the next size up, should be easier to control. Overall I prefer the XD over the Glock, I think they've got better triggers and the grips work better for me.

But, +1 on trying out the M&P too, they're pretty nice.

I have a G27 in a Milt Sparks VM2 on my hip right now. Real comfortable, easy to hide, uses full size G22 mags for backup mags. The pinkie +1 Pearce extension is something you'll be wanting though for the small carry mags. But maybe not. It makes the grip a tad larger, but gives a lot of control and comfort plus one extra round for the small size. It is accurate, compact, safe, simple, reliable, easy to hide, comfortable, --I like it. I have a G29 in the same rig and like it too, it weighs more and is a little larger, but hides and carries well and it is more accurate than the G27. They all have the same Glock trigger, which is nice and consistent when you get used to it. It doesn't feel nice, but it always feels the same, and it always goes bang. It has no switches or levers, nothing to operate, nothing to jam or malfunction. They are stupid simple pistols.

G27, is in my mind, one of the best carry pieces made. Tough, reliable, small, lots of firepower, pretty accurate. I bought it instead of the G26 simply because it was the same size and since it was a carry piece from the get go, I wanted the .40 over 9mm. In fact, it is my only .40 pistol, my main carry piece. I feel it is a great compromise all around. And regarding tough, since you carry it it sometimes gets sweaty and dirty all on its own. The Glock doesn't mind, and it has that tenifer finish too, that stuff just doesn't wear.

You can also get a Glock factory .357 Sig barrel for the G27 and it is the only swap you have to do to convert the weapon, everything else works. I haven't done it, but it is nice to be able to. I'm not fond of the conversion barrels though.

About the only thing you need to do to make it carry ready is to change the sights to some Trijicon night sights or something similar. And change out the mag bases if you want the pinkie ext. It isn't the nicest thing out there, but I feel it is the best tool for the job. But then again, I have six Glocks. Anytime I needed a pistol that was dependable, after looking around, I always went with a Glock. Today I don't need tools like that, save my carry piece, most are just range toys. So nowadays, I try to diversify!

Oh yeah, make sure to get a 3rd generation G27, not a 4th. They are still working out the bugs in those models, I'd wait until they worked well for a year or two with no problems before I went with their newer ones. But the 3rd gen stuff is good to go.

I sold a couple of guns and bought a Glock G23. I also got a 40-9mm conversion and a 357 Sig barrel from Lone Wold Distributing. Three calibers for about $700 including Mep night sights. I have to shoot 124g 9mm because the for 40 recoil spring (and 9mm mags of course). No other modifications though. Sweet EDC. I tote it in a Galco tuck-N-Go, a $30 tuckable IWB holster. I can wear it at 2, 3 and 4:00 o'clock and it will automatically adjust to my body's contour. Just my two cents.

Go with a glock.I have a sub compact XD.40S&W. I have a glock 26 & wish I had gotten the Glock 27 instead .The XD is a nice gun, just like the way the Glock feels & works!

I too recommend not ruling out the M&P .40c, as I believe you can get them with additional safties features such as mag disconnect & thumb safties if you wish. I really like mine. LM

Bought my first XD 5-6 years ago. Up to four now. Never had a malfunction. Qualed with each for duty guns at one time or another, and put my 1911s on the top shelf of the safe. The XDs are 2 compacts and 2 subcompacts.

I think the Glock, S&W M&P, and XDM fall into one category, and the S&W M&P with safety and the Ruger SR fall into another - that being whether or not you want a manual safety. Decide this first. I personally choose not to have one, so I never wonder whether the safety is on or not. Once you've made that decision, uh...from what I understand, they're all good choices in roughly the same price range.

My preference is XDm, it has been reliable for me and fed and ate everything (besides cool-loaded reloads) I threw at it. I've shot the Glock, and it's certainly nice. I own a Ruger LCP and SP101, so I can't comment on the SR40, but I know ruger makes quality pistols. And I've heard good things about the M&P. Try them, figure out what works best for you.

Another vote for the G23. I have carried one for 18 years and will eventually replace it with a Gen 4. That being said, I would feel safe and happy with an HK, XD, XDM, Ruger SR, Beretta, Bersa and whichever others I am currently forgetting, but I do prefer the Glock. My second choice would probably be the Ruger SR40C, especially if price is taken into consideration.

I left out a lot of possible options in my post, like beretta, HK, CZ, sig, etc. because it looks like the OP is looking more for a SFA gun (based on his three choices in the OP). Of course, that was an assumption on my part.

I prefer the Glock 23 over the older XD .40 I had. It's just a more comfortable carry for me. I liked the XD a lot but the G 23 fits my needs the best. I'd try several before making deciding. I did not like the Kahr CW .40 but my friends loved it. I just couldn't fire it accurately and couldn't get use to the trigger. Lot's of good .40's out there though.

I have a HK P2000sk which i think is about as high of quality as it gets in compacts but holster options are far more limited than some others. I have or have had a regular sized Glock 22, M&P 40 and XD 40. Based on my experience with the standard sizes i'd go with the M&P mostly due to ergonomics. The XD was my least favorite partially because it had more perceived recoil. One thing to consider is if you have a full size gun of which a compact is available assuming mags are interchangeable.
