hey all. i am trying to find a good bullet mold for the m1 carbine. my dad has a lyman 115 gr pointed tip mold that i have never been completely satisfied with. it does not feed nearly as well as hard ball does, even though accuracy is acceptable.

im looking at the lee 113 gr flat nose (C309-113-F) .309 mold. the price is attractive, and i have never had any real problems with lee molds in the past. has anybody ever used this mold for the m1 carbine?

does anybody have a personal favorite? i would like to keep velocities on the low end.

thanks in advance to all u knowledgable casters here on thr!

Would using a non-jacketed bullet cause the rifle barrel to get fouled up?

My favorite bullet in a .30 Carbine pistol (RBH) is 100 grain .32 RNFP flat-based bullet that I assume was intended for a .32-20. They are .312 or .313 when I buy them, but I resize them down to .309 and they work great. I haven't found a bullet mold yet.

That C309-113-F actually looks pretty close except for the base.

hqmhqm: i havnt had any real problems in the past, but i havnt shot boatloads of them either. i think as long as i keep them hard enough, and the velocities moderate ill be ok.

zxcvbob: ive thought about buying a .310 or .312 mold and resizing, but i thought id try a .309 mold first (ill still run it thru the sizer). i like this look of this mold, but i was hoping somebody had first hand experience w/ it. thanks for the suggestions.

FWIW - there's a thread on this over in castboolits.gunloads.com in the military rifles section. I don't know if it helps or not.

Regards,
Dave

thanks for the tip dmftoy1. this gives me a real good place to start, i think ill give lymans 313631 a try as well as the lee C309-113-F. im kind of suprised how well some have said swc have shot in their carbines.

worse case scenerio is ill have to work up some powder puff loads for my other .30 cal rifles to justify the price of the molds. gee, darn...i hate having to shoot a bunch of rounds to justify a purchase i made...:).

How would with that gas-check-based bullet work without a gas check? I'll be casting with quenched wheel weights and loaded to maximum pressures (about 1600 to 1700 fps from a handgun)

I haven't needed a gas check with plain based bullets and get surprisingly little leading.
