Hey folks, I want to apologize for starting one of these threads, but I've been thinking about purchasing a rifle for target shooting and plinking. I already have a bolt action .22, so I'm looking for something new and a bit more powerful of caliber. Preferably with a magazine capacity of 10.

I live in Illinois and just barely inside Cook County (sadly), so its pretty difficult to find a good semi automatic rifle that hasn't been banned. If you know of a good one with a mag capacity of 10 or close, please let me know.

But if that's out of the picture, I have been looking at slide action rifles. The Remington 7615 seemed like the perfect rifle for me, but it seems so expensive for the gun, with prices at gunbroker around $650 and $700.

I'm also open to lever action rifles, but I don't know much at all about them.

Any ideas for me? Thanks so much in advance!

You mentioned that you were open to lever actions. I just bought a Henry Big Boy in 44 Mag. Great gun. Action is smooth right from the box. 44 Mag will also let you shoot most game in you will most likely run into. Plus the nostalgia factor of it adds to the enjoyment. Another factor is that in your state a lever action sort of keeps you below the radar of the anti gun crowd. Also using a gun that accepts pistol ammo has some benefits since you can carry a handgun and not have to worry about 2 types of ammo.

Well it turns out my area doesn't ban the SKS as long as it doesn't have a detachable magazine, so I'm looking around for one of the yugo ones with a 10 rd fixed mag. Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Unfortunately they are banned. That will have to wait until I move out of Cook County (and possibly Illinois as well).

Just a few more years...

If you look around on gun broker and are patient you can get them cheaper. I bought mine for $559.00. Now I just have to finish out the waiting period and all have it.

I will post a range report soon.

Yeah I see a 7615 on Gunbroker right now that I can have for 600 and free shipping..

I'm tempted.

But at the same time I could get an SKS for less than 200.. so its hard for me to justify the money right now.

Well I got my SKS yesterday and it looks great! I hope to take it to the range next weekend. I'm very happy with my purchase.

I think the SKS was a good choice. I was starting to look at maybe getting a Kel-Tec SU 16, which is not mentioned in the Cook County AWB, but I couldn't figure out whether or not it would be banned due to its characteristics; I couldn't even get a clear answer from some gun shop owners in Cook County!
