I pick up my sps this week and trying to get some decent glass for it. I will be using it primarily for paper punching and yes 1000 yards is a goal but not an immediate goal , rather look at a maximum 500 for now, and would like to use it for hunting maybe. Cost, well the rifle is costing me 550 so keeping the optic under 800 would be best. Just looking for a good scope that could serve me with my first precision set up

Mabey a Super Sniper by SWFA, their about $300-$400, or a Falcon Menace 4-14x40 (or 42-50, I'm not sure), their abound $400 also, both scopes have good/great reveiws. Sniper Central has done revews on both. www.snipercentral.com

Let us know about some of those groups. :)

Take a look at the Millett TRS-1. I have one on my Savage and I like it a lot. It has good turrets and a huge range of adjustment. I will definitely get one for my next rifle also.

For under $800 it is hard to beat the Sightron SIII 6-24x50 with mildot. Although, it is pretty damn hard to come across one at the moment...for a reason.

Hands down a Ziess...any Ziess, but my pick is a Conquest 4-12x44AO with target turrets and Rapid Z-1000 reticle if you contact Scott at Liberty Optics he should be able to squeeze you in under $800 for that model (if, and only if, you ASK FOR THE THR.org DISCOUNT).

zeiss or leupold 4.5-14 w/ turrets.

you don't necessarily need the quality of glass for what you want to do that either of those scopes have, but you do absolutely need the clicks to be accurate and to return to zero when you put them there like both of these scopes will do. i can't tell you how frustrating it is to dial up 6 moa of adjustment for a shot only to find the impact moved almost half what it was supposed to, and the next set of corrections jumps it to 3 times what it was supposed to be, and then having to re-zero when you're done for the day because your zero wasn't, thereby wiping out all your numbered stops...

no experience w/ the rapid-z or varminter reticles, but if you are dialing in, i don't think those reticles are necessary. if you don't want to dial, i would suggest getting a custom reticle installed after you shoot your rifle and determine actual ballistics (versus what a ballistic program predicts)...

if you are dialing in, i don't think those reticles are necessary.
What is needed and useful are two different things...but I find the reticle and turrets work well together. The reticle for quick shots, and the turrets dialed in according to the distance. A mil-dot or mil-hash reticle is even better for target shooting because it allows you to gauge the distance more quickly (though not as accurate as an LRF), but the reticle is not as fast as a varmit, boon & crockett, Rapid Z type reticle.

I would give the Falcon a shot, I know I just did. From what I hear it's good quality, and it definitely is the best bang for your buck if you're looking for things like FFP and milrad adjustments. They also have a model with an illuminated reticle. I got mine from sightwonders.com for $395.00, no shipping.
