I have a small range set up on my property and would like to have an instructor give the Texas CHL class to several of my friends and family members (mostly females).

How would I find somebody willing to do this?

You're most welcome, Master Dei.

For those interested in this, the criteria is in DPS Administrative Rules, not state law. Go here for detailed information.

There is a gent over on the Texas CHL Forum who may be able to help. He posts under the handle of 'greybeard'.

Lots of useful information re TxCHL there as well as knowledgable and friendly folks.

Not only must the instructor be DPS approved, so must the range.
Now, I can see the logic about the instructor needing to meet ceratin criteria, and "approved". Otherwise, any idiot could charge for a class, give bad, or no, information, and sign off, defeating the purpose of requirinf a class in the first place. But, I cant see what difference the range maks. As long as its physically possible, and safe/legal to do whater shooting needs to be done, and an "approved" instructor does it, what difference does the range itself make?

I dont see where the required course of fire coulndt be done at even a really small backyard range. (I'll say Im surprised at the detailed shooting requirements though. Not that it seems ver hard, or even "over the top" really, just very detailed. here, the law just says minimun 50rds live fire. no "specifics" about it betond that.)

Seems like a pointless restriction to me....

I agree. Not to mention that the actual firing portion of the class is a joke. It is really just to ensure that somebody knows how to operate a gun. I think the max range, iirc, is 7 yards.
