And I am down to these two, for about the same money, a used HiPower or a RIA Tactical 9mm.

Never had a HiPower, but the RIA would fit in with my 45's.

A used Hi-Power huh?
Be careful of old BHPs, some of them can be worth less than a new or recently made BHP.

Either way you go I'm sure you'll make JMB proud.

2 nice choices. You can't lose either way!

Can you elaborate? This is true with almost any gun. Is there something about the Hi Power we should be aware of other than the clones being worth less than the "originals"?

I looked over one of those first batch (ca. 1948) commercial FN 9mm pistols. Plain jane gun but the fit, finish, was first rate. I also liked more trouble prone internal extractor and wonderful aluminum magazine followers. The RIA Tactical is very crude weapon by comparison.

Browning HP is a nice gun; however, it has a tendency to catch the back of your hand between the hammer and the gun causing oowie. I go 1911 then CZ75 and clones and then S&W for 9x19.
Your choice is which feels best to you and do you want a high-cap 9mm?

There are a bunch of Israeli contract FN Hi Powers on the various auction sites right now for about $400.

New gun worth more than used gun?

Unpossible.

;)

Unlike some plastic framed autos the HP is expensive gun to make. Don't worry if they ever stop making new ones every gun whore will want one and used ones will be a lot more expensive.

Meh, for all you wise guys in this thread the Hi-Power has been around for so long that many people think because their gun is old (therefore antique) it must be worth a lot.

I sometimes remind people that old guns are usually expensive only if they are rare, unique or culturally significant. I was talking to someone once who was positively convinced that his Savage 1907, .32 acp was worth a pile of money because it was old.

Most of them are older than 50 years so they're C&R-eligible too. That is very interesting.

I'm pretty sure there are no laws or rules against buying them both:D
Of course that's just my opinion;)

Actually, most of the Israeli's in this batch are dated late 80's to mid 90's and are priced around $400. There are some older ones as well, and they go for a bit more since they have the old P35 style burr hammer, etc.

I have 2 nice 9mm 1911s, they are good, really good shooters. I suggest you add a few, very few bucks and get an STI Spartan 9mm, way better trigger out of the box than a new RIA 1911, better sights too. IMO most good 1911s would outshoot the Browning, even those with mediocre triggers. So if these are your only choices get a 1911 9mm, it's easy to up grade and find parts, magazines, etc.

I don't think you could go wrong with either choice. As to my own personal preference, if it were a M1911, I would get it in .38 Super then add a 9mm. barrel and magazine. If I were going with a used Hi-Power, then I would look for a Mk.II or a Mk.III model.

I would buy the browning over the RIA 9mm. RIA is a cheap phillipino made gun and questionable quality. If you want a 9mm 1911, then get the STi spartan 9mm.

I just got back form the range shooting 2 hi powers and 3 1911 45acp and the 1911's out shot the 2 brownings hands down.

The 1911's felt like part of your hand and groups were almost all touching each other, overall best gun around.

The browning shot well , but not as good, triggers were also very long and heavy, shots were not touching much, the one great thing, is that the browning can carry 13-15- shots as compared to the 1911's 8 rounds.

A Hi Power... or a cheap copy (Decent, but still...) 1911....

Hi Power.

(I have and love several examples of both)

It's a mighty strange phenomena! A new Hi Power costs about $1000, but a used one costs about $400. Who'd a thunk it?

Yeah,
new BHP is around $900 - $1000
and all these used from Israel - around $350 - $400
(one guy from Israel told me that how they used them. I will say - all these guns about 45 - 50 % used. So, if you buy cheap - you may spend additional 3 -4 hundreds to fix problems)

Oh, btw - do you know how much for BHP with nazi stamp on it? or even old nazi capitan version???

Just to inform you XR1200, the RIA is a fantastic pistol, and by the way the STI Spartan is in actuality one of those Cheaply made Filipino gun as well! :)

There's what people ask... and there's what things sell for.

There's a Nearly NIB Hi Power on FAL files for $850 right now.

Been there for more than a few days. Lota attention, no buy.

I've paid from $274- $400 for my Hi powers... some in EXCELLENT shape.

Yup both RIA and STI Spartan parts are made by Armscor. The STI is assembled here in the US from Armscor parts by STI while the RIAs are fully assembled in the Philippians.

Other than some scratches on the finish (holster wear), mine is perfect - tight fit, the bore is like a mirror, accurate as all heck. These are police trade-ins, and most cops don't shoot their guns very much (100 rounds a year?). The bulk of these are FN contract guns made from about 1988 to 1996.

I *may* get mine refinished, just because I think it would look cool with a gray park military finish, but it doesn't need it. Right now, these BHP's are going for about the price of a German or Russian Makarov. I don't think you'll see a bargain like this ever again.

I laughed at the post about Rock Island being bad and how good STI is. I am amazed at some of the stuff spouted on the net by people who don't know what they are talking about. Amazing stuff! If you need a good laugh just browse some boards here.

Got three Hi Powers in the last 5 months. Two were cherry alloy frame imports (these are all gone now from the distributor) that I paid a handpick fee (add'l $20ea) for $480ea, and later bought an Israeli import for $359 at a gunshow. I sold one of the alloy guns (at a reasonable profit) to help finance the mild "overhaul" on the other one, which brought the final tab for my "custom" alloy hi power to about $800-$850, which includes the Esmeralda grips. I sent the Israeli gun in for a similar treatment, and it will be about $50 more when the work is done, with matching grips. Both gun were immaculate inside, and the Israeli needed some outside filing, sanding, and handwork to bring it up good enough for the smith to finish it out the rest of the way to be presentable, also with NP3 finish. I am still waiting on that one, but here is the FN alloy (photo). Both will look about the same. Bottom line, buy a surplus gun that is fine inside, choose one that the scratches and dings can easily be removed, do a little customizing, new finish, and you have a custom higher performance Hi Power for less than a new or even higher end used commercial gun.
