I posted this over in the rifle section, but it got pushed off the page very quickly. Here's the story:

I have an old Hopkins and Allen 722 single shot rifle and I'm looking for someone that can give it a new barrel.

I had the rifle apprised by multiple parties, and its pretty much worthless. But the action is in good shape and the gun is kind of a neat novelty, so I thought i would make it a shooter.

This barrel has to be the simplest barrel I have ever seen and isn't even pressed into the receiver; its only held in by a dimple on the barrel, and a screw that presses on said dimple. I think a competent gun smith should be able to turn down a blank for this in no time at all.

I would like to find someone local to the Chicago area, but I could send this out since the barrel is easily removable from the action. This barrel is so simple that i could just send the dimensions as well. I would rather do that than risk losing the original barrel...

Send it to Redman's and have it re-lined.

I know it will come back shooting better then it did when it was new.
And the original sights and markings will still be there for posterity.

Buying a blank, turning a blank, recutting the sight dovetails, and re-bluing it will cost you far more then re-lining it.

yep, you'd easily spend 3-4 times what the gun is worth. Relining is the way to go.

PS: If you do go the relining method, they will need the complete barreled-action so they can set the headspace properly to make up for action wear.

But that would be true of somebody somewhere made a barrel too.

Funny thing about this, i dont think you would need the action to get the head spacing right. The barrel is about .7" in diameter and has a step turned down to about .5 then another smaller step where the chamber begins. Its headspaced off the shoulders of these steps since the barrel does not press into the action. I have some experience running a lathe myself, and if i had one, i would be confident that i could just copy these dimensions and it would be fine (of course i would check it). But as far as the sights go, that could be a problem.

I planned on refinishing the rifle myself... metal and wood.

the headspace on a rimfire is from the breachface to the point on the chamber end where the front of the rim touches. While the barrel has the dimple where the screw locks down it won't necessarily get the headspace correct.
