.30-06 with the reduced recoil rounds? They are more than adequate for deer and as he toughens up.. er grows.. he can move up to the normal stuff.

The .308 family of cartridges is a smorgasbord. Can't go wrong. .243 Win, 260 Rem, 7-08 Rem, .358 Win. It's all good.

Look into a Savage 99 in either 300 Sav or a newer one in 308. I've never personally shot the 308 cal on but the 300 Sav or even a 303 Sav can be shot quite accurately by my 12 yr old son with full power loads, it's a fairley light rifle & the 300 will send a 180gr slug down range at 2400fps and the Savage 99 in any caliber can shoot the spitzer rounds since they have a box or rotary magazine. Here is a pic of my son shooting a 99 but in 250 sav.
