I don't know how it happened, but I accidentally ran across some info on the Serbu BFG-50 a few nights ago, and, well, I've been a little giddy over the idea of getting a .50 instead of .308 ever since. I guess I'm kind of looking for feedback and input on various .50bmg rifles out there that don't cost much over $2,000, and are under or just as 20lbs.

How long of a barrel do you really need with a .50? I've seen everything from 18 inches to 33. I guess my qualifier here is I want to get serious benefit from the round, not just make a lot of noise. I don't need 1 MOA accuracy at 1000 yards, but of course the more accurate the better within reason.

Also, what about these .50mbg uppers for AR's? I dislike the cartridge and gas system of the AR, but a bolt action .50bmg doesn't use those and the handle/trigger of the AR isn't really that bad. Since the stock is part of the .50 upper, you're really just using the reciever as the trigger group and handle. A local company makes a .50 upper that becomes a 13lbs gun, and that becomes very practical for me, assuming they are rugged enough. There's a video of one of the builders firing this particular .50 like a pistol, from an isocolese stance, I believe. That says something about recoil.

What's the verdict on takedown .50's? Does the takedown feature compromise ruggedness at all? I like the idea of ultra-portability, but I won't sacrafice toughness for it.

Any other advice or comments on this subject are very welcome. I've checked out the bigger hammer forum, but I guess I didn't find what I was looking for.
