Losing my grips!

Hi everybody, I have a CZ 97b and it's getting under my skin. It is sooo close to being perfect for me that the 2 small problems really bug me. The grips are a hair too big for me and I have to get 12 volt man to sand them and refinish them. The kick is they are only held on by one screw in each panel and when I shoot it comes loose and the grip starts to slide around.
What should I do about it? I could lock-tite the screw but then how would I remove it for cleaning? Should I find lock washers and/or retap the frame for a slightly larger screw? It happens on both sides so if I stripped the frame I did it on both sides.

Hi Pete,

I've got a 97B that fortunately doesn't suffer from that problem, but I've heard of others doing it. My brother had a CZ83 with the same problem and he tried loc-tite with no luck. I can't remember how he finally fixed it. It seems like you might be able to use a really thin rubber washer/gasket type thing under the screws. If you stripped the frame I guess all you can do is retap it.

The trick is to use locktite and DON'T remove the grips for cleaning. I've never heard of removing the grips unless you plan to detail strip and clean the gun. I can think that a gun being used as a duty weapon only needs a detail strip every 6 months or so. If you get it wet (rain or drop in water) or if you plan on storing for a long period of time (years) you might want to remove the grips... otherwise DON'T REMOVE THE GRIPS.

In fact, you only really have to field strip it every 400 rounds or so. You can afford to wipe down the outside and run a swab down the bore after every range session. Excessive stripping and cleaning wears a gun out quicker than ANY amount of actual firing and carrying can.

Thanks for your replies. I don't really want to loc tite the grips on because even allowing 500 rounds between cleanings it is only two range trips before I have to remove them. My 40p has a lock washer for the grips I might try to get more from cz usa and try them

Just to clarify what I was saying, you should ALMOST NEVER remove the grips unless there is a problem. "Field Stripping" consists of separating the gun into barrel, spring, slide, frame assembly, and slide stop. Don't take it down any further than that. DON'T TAKE THE GRIPS OFF in other words. There is nothing functional that you should need to take apart under the grips. You are more likely to wear the grips and/or grip screws out by taking it apart that often. Resist the urge to remove the grips.
