I'm beginning to think I am in the vast minority. I am pretty huge into firearms but have never nor will ever hunt (as long as I'm not forced to). Anyone else out there like that?

And yes I am a hypocrite, I am a meat eater but could never bring myself to shoot an animal.

i am a hunter so my collection is borne out of that end, just as is my boat, which is not to far from you..in Hampton...im a fisherman. i shoot at a range where many of my friends do not hunt and my boat is slipped next to a cruiser that never fishes....to each there own. i do not see a conflict. i have a camera but i am not a photographer..

I shoot paper and stuff more than I shoot animals, but as a hunter, a lot of my guns, especially my long arms, are focused around hunting and varmint control. Looking pretty good on the varmint front, haven't had a gopher in over a week.

Not hunting but eating meat doesn't make you a hypocrite.
Being opposed to hunting entirely and eating meat would make you a hypocrite.
I enjoy hunting and find it practical, but it isn't for everyone, and that's perfectly alright.

I support it but don't do it.

I think it's very boring and my interest in firearms has nothing to do with hunting game.

I will buy my food "pre-hunted."

I fish. Never been hunting.
Its not that I don't want to hunt, its just that after you fire the bullet, then what???
No idea how to skin or dress game.
What I should do is go with someone experienced in that matter.
Problem is, my friends that do hunt live about 1.5 hrs away and by the time I hear of their hunting trip, they are back

I'm in the same boat as you Hanzo. I have quite a few guns, many of which would probably make excellent hunting rifles. However I've never fired them at anything living, unless grass on the backstop at the range counts?

I also have no interest in trying it...I doubt I'd be much good, nor does it really float my boat. That said, I have no problem with hunters, and support it. I just don't care to be directly involved in it. I also am largely against trophy hunting however, figure if you're going to kill something, there should be a good reason for it.

I'm also probably in the minority. An avid collector/shooter, but just have no interest in hunting. I'll freely confess to intentionally missing when duck hunting with the posse. I'm man enough to admit it :D

Those are just my preferences, but I certainly respect the interests of others who do enjoy hunting. It's all good.

I believe that in general, putting on outdoor camo, an orange hat and slung rifle does not a hunter make.
Learning basic fieldcraft, the habits of the animals you're stalking, and how to hunt safely so you don't end up accidentally harvesting a human are all pretty crucial things to learn.
Right now, I don't have the time to do all of that, so I refrain. Perhaps one day.
That said, I have no qualms with hunting in general. I also have no issue with trophy hunting, although ethically I think hunters should either consume what they harvest or at least make sure it gets donated to a food bank.
I also think hunting pests and vermin is fine too. The likeliest form of hunting that I'd participate in would probably be a prairie dog hunt - it's good for the prairie dogs themselves (overpopulated) the farmers/ranchers (fewer fields dug up and fewer holes that serve as leg traps for free-ranging animals). Preserving meat isn't an issue - the 'dogs (from what I've seen of the hunting videos) seem to all but explode when hit, and as I understand it, they are plague-carriers anyway so eating what remained would be a pretty unhealthy choice...

I don't hunt, but I'm certainly not opposed to hunting.
I've just never hunted, so I wouldn't have a clue as to what I'm doing.
Whacked, I'm like you.
No idea how to skin or dress game.

I used to fish, a lot.

Hunting? Never really desired to do it. Not saying that I wouldn't do it. I don't have a problem with it. Especially after moving out to the country and driving at night where I live. These deer are out of control. It's almost unsafe to drive.

A long time ago I would shoot at water fowl and upland birds. I even got a couple, but the regulations got to be too much. I haven't shot at anything but clays pigeons and paper groundhogs.
I have no problems with others hunting for meat or sport. Fishing the one thing I do have a problem with, but would never work to see banned, is catch and release. Specially when the fish is so worn out and gets eaten off the hook. I'd rather eat the fish.

This goes for me too. When I was growing up,getting to go hunting with the men of the family was a rite of passage. Being granted that previlege was more sought after than even getting your first driver's license.

My interest in firearms was first borne out of my interest in military history. Hunting came later...and though I'm still interested in hunting and would like to hunt again, it's not practical for me at this time in life. My interests in firearms today have more to do with an engineering geeks hobby (gunsmithing and reloading). In the future I'd like to take up competitive shooting, as I've always been a pretty good shot.

To each his own.

Same situation here-not my own interest in guns is from a history angle, and the challenge of getting shots on target. However, I have been known to "stalk" my subjects as a photographer, sitting quietly and patiently figuring out my subject and how to shoot it. I guess I might make for a fair to middling hunter- just never tried it before. The way things are going, though, hunting skills might not be a bad idea to know.

This is a little confusing, you are fine with sport hunting, but sport fishing is a no no?

I dont hunt, but I can. I went on a trip to hunt coyotes in 2005. Shot one and it didnt die right away. Never pointed a weapon at an animal since. So, if I were hungry and needed food, yes I would hunt. But after seeing that dog die as I walked up I chose not to hunt for sport. I dont have a problem with others hunting though. Its their choice.

I wounded and lost the prettiest and largest buck I have ever seen back in '90 or '91. I've been deer hunting twice since then and went "Barney Fife" tactical both times - one bullet in the pocket in case a rabid squirrel tried to attack me. Just can't drop the trigger on a magnificant animal like that again.

Hogs, maybe. I'll go dove hunting on occassion. But anything more, nope.

But I love to shoot. Give me a stack of targets and I'll get after it.

Nothing hypocritical about it.

I get looks though when I say, "I'm a shooter, not a hunter," as though that makes me a terrorist-in-waiting.

Q

I never have. I don't have a moral objection to hunting, and if I were born 100 years ago (or if society were to degrade dramatically) I would learn how and do it.

In all honesty, it's been ~5 years since I've fired a rifle and ~20 years since I've fired a shotgun. I shoot pistols/revolvers about once a week. That is where my interests lie, and as long as I live in a populous area, I view that as the most valuable use of my training time, and (unfortunately) the most likely to have a return on investment.

When I retire and move out to the sticks (ten years or so from now), maybe I will take up hunting. I'll tell you one thing...if I do, I will certainly take it a lot more seriously than some. Just yesterday I was talking with a co-worker who said he was going to take his rifle, have it bore-sighted and go deer hunting because "that's close enough". I am not a currently proficient rifleman, but I know buffoonery when I hear it. :)

In the macro...yes. Ask the individual 'dogs that you vaporize how good it is for them...you might get a conflicting point of view. :)

Don't hunt, don't eat much meat (okay, occasionally steal a slice of pepperoni pizza from my daughter). Mostly, I'm a target shooter, paper etc. But I will admit that if somebody in Kansas were to offer me a little day trip shooting prairie dogs, the idea does have some appeal to me. I'm not begging or anything, but just sayin'
