Me and my near-blindness have decided I want to add a rail and different sights to my Saiga.

I'm on a student's budget, and don't have the $150 and inclination to buy a Texas Weapons System rail, but I do have a mill, experience with it, and access to all the used and cheap parts the internet and bargain bins at the local gun show have to offer.

So, the quickest and easiest way to do this would be to throw on on of those rails that replace the rear sight and screw down to the stock tang, perhaps machine a QD system for it instead of trusting a screw on an uneven portion of the rifle, and put AR sights on it.

Problem being, the rail itself comes to the top of the existing sight, and AR sights are another .75" or so. So, cheek weld becomes "hold your head here and try not to whack your chin."

Is there anything out there that uses much lower clamp-on sights? Or common aperture sights that I could just machine a dovetail into the rail for?

I do have the drum sights off an HK rifle... would it be easier just to machine up a mount system for those, than try to find anything more effective? I always did like the AR sight picture more than these HK's...
