I really like what it does, how the brass comes out and such.

However, I cannot tighten the screw on lid tight enough to seal it. Water always leaks and it is getting worse. I put the gasket around the rim of the 'inside' lid.

Am I doing it wrong, or is that just how it works?

It looks as if the gasket should be seated in the recess of the screw on lid.

Reread the owners manual.

The lid needs to be very tight on mine to prevent leaks. Been that way since new. I often tighten again (or at least check it) a few minutes later.

I think I usually put the gasket on top of the drum before screwing on the cap, but I'm not sure that matters (versus putting the gasket in the cap). The manual doesn't seem specific. But I do wipe down the cap, drum and gasket after each use, making sure there is no residue on any if those surfaces.

On mine the Gasket goes on a bowl shaped black plastic piece that goes in the drum.
Then I screw the lid on. (which holds down the black plastic piece)

My dog got my gasket once and I had to get Lyman to send a new one. It took forever.
(Maybe not High Road but I would say call and fib saying yours tore and get them to send you a spare for free, or order one so you have a spare, I didn't fib exactly, mine was torn I just neglected to mention the dog)
Edit: Maybe spending an hour on hold calling Lyman made me forget about the dog....
Post #2 says put gasket in the lid, so the new ones might be different but on mine the gasket does not go in the lid.
