Can someone tell and show me the difference between the J and X type shell holders on a Lyman press? Ive looked on the net and cant seem to find anything. Thanks

The "X" shell holders are the common universal type now in use. The "J" type have a long tail that fits into he old style Lyman presses. There is an adapter from Lyman that allows the new type of shell holder in the old presses. Midway sells these adapters and primer seaters for the old presses as we speak. These are neat old presses but take the small old style dies from Lyman. I have one of these antique presses and a ton of 310 dies. Putting all this together is on my "to-do" list along with six hundred other noble undertakings.

The best of the old style Lyman presses is the All American turret press. It uses 7/8x14 dies and the small J shell holder.
