Hey Jim thanks for stopping in. That reloading business is a great money saving idea.

I need to pick up some supplies when things loosen up a bit. How do you find the market right now for cases, primer, powder as far as price and availablity?

You one stop shop or have multiple vendor sources for materials?

The fact that the 340 and other J Frames appropriately rated can run spl plus p and .357 makes them a versatile revolver.
 
Dennis, I have no feel for the market right now. You'll have to do a quick overview in the reloading forum--I think they have a thread or two tracking supplies and availability.

After the last shortage, I stocked up on my desired powders and primers--I have enough brass and bullets that I am in good shape, probably for the rest of my life. Health issues have slowed down my shooting a lot the last two seasons. I am better this year, but I am hardly shooting 500 rounds a month.

That 900-fps load I mentioned above also seems to be a good round in the Night Guard 386 that has graduated to being my bedside gun. 2 1/2" barrel, 7 rounds, lightweight (but not like a j-frame).

I may even see what some DEWCBB rounds loaded up with a standard-type case depth look like. In hardcast.

Yes indeed this is an old thread, almost seven years now but from what I can determine the 340 is more popular than ever and in short supply although not impossible to find.
I still carry mine in a Mika Roundcut most of the time. It is still loaded with Speer Gold Dot For Short Barrel.
Feel free say hello and share your 340 stories.

I was just at the range with mine today! Mine is showing some holster-wear by now, but I actually like that. I have multiple J-frames, but the 340 is the one I'd keep if I could have only one.
 
DAdams, it is good you re-surfaced this thread. Like you, I still carry my 340, and carry it daily.

I did update the holster from the Mika Roundcut to a doubletap kydex. (I now prefer to have a hooked, and more-rigid, holster; that feature makes the holster more usable for switching to a vest-inside-pocket carry when driving.

Health issues the last two-three years have precluded as much range practice as I would like--and those health issues now include arthritis, so the practice is more painful as well. This year--now that the spring is here after MN's winter-that-would-not-end--I'm going to seriously consider switching to my 640 as a daily carry gun to gain the benefit of extra weight for less recoil. If I do, I will get a new holster to specifically fit the 640.

Nonetheless, I've shot perhaps 3500 rounds now in the 340, and my carry ammo is now a reloaded round built around a 158-gr. LHP bullet. (It is a round similar to a Rem 38S12, only built in a 357 case.) I also carry a strip loaded with four more rounds for two quick two-round reloads.

Other posters can find contributions I have made over the years to this thread simply by searching on my username ('jfh') in this thread alone. Newer members carrying the 340 may want to see the laser grip comparisons, or the comparisons with the 360 and 640.

Hello everyone.

Glad to see this thread is still alive and well. I still carry my 340 daily in a Mika round cut. While I agree the retention could be better, it primarily serves the purpose of keeping the gun upright and never comes out on the draw. Still enjoy shooting the 340 on occasion, although the 125 grain double tall magnums I use are a handful. I carry a glock iwb on days when I want extra capacity and I can conceal it well enough, but the 340 is the gun I carry in my pocket 24/7. My wife does as well, and we both have tremendous confidence in our carry companion.

anyone know what these dots on the frame of my 340m&p? had this firearm for yrs and always wondered....
 
Long time since I've been on this site but I thought I'd come take a look. Seems pretty quiet on here but I'm glad the site is still around, the 340 M&P IS STILL ONE OF MY FAVORITE HANDGUNS!!

One reason I stopped by again is that I recall one or more good threads on the best pocket holster for the 340. I will dig through the pages of threads but if somebody knows off the top of their head which page to look on or can provide the link, please do.

Or if you simply wish to discuss anew the pocket holsters that suit this gun, I'm all ears.

I did watch a Hickok45 video on youtube where he discusses pocket holsters for various guns and he demonstrates their use. On these videos I noticed that many of the holsters still PRINTED and it was obvious the man was carrying a gun in his pocket.

My goal is to avoid any printing resembling a gun or a gun in a holster. Obviously there will be a bulge, but I prefer it not resembling a gun, just a nondescript bulge is enough.

I do prefer pocket carry, that's the whole point of these guns for me.

my EDC is a 340PD with custom optic sights .. rides in a custom made pocket holster.

printing is not really your concern .. the holster coming out with pistol is the problem faced with pocket holsters.

solution was to custom make a holster that has a nice loose fit with smooth leather inside. rough side out grabbing the pocket.
sewn on my Pfaff 1222 .. not pretty but works perfect!

1.5 second or faster draws .. very clean and smooth draws.

Had the 340 to the range yesterday with a couple others. 9Pro and PM9.
I really enjoy shooting the 340 and it did me proud on some active shooting drills we ran.
8 years my favorite Centennial J Frame for EDC.

When I carry the 340 it's always in a Mika round cut.
 
@MisterSmith - I have tried a few different pocket holsters over the years, but have come back around to the first one I tried - the DeSantis Nemesis. I tried the DeSantis "Fly," which has an extra flap to reduce printing, but it does too much in my opinion - too bulky.

The Mika holsters are almost universally loved, but I did not care much for mine. It does provide zero retention, which is good for reliable draws, but to me it was too sloppy and I didn't care for the top ridge of the holster which if I recall correctly is some sort of flexible plastic ring to keep it open. In dress pants it actually felt like the gun could fall out when sitting.

I prefer the Nemesis, which does give some mild resistance to letting go of the gun, but the outside is so sticky there is no way the holster is coming out with the gun. It is almost impossible to pull out the gun and holster together without turning your whole pocket inside out. :)

One nice thing about a j-frame is (to me) the print it does give off does not scream "gun!" - I sometimes carry a Ruger LCP which is smaller by every measure but in many pants to me it prints much worse than the 340.

I'm still using a Mika round cut. Great coverage for no printing and fast and easy out of the pocket with minimal effort.

Nemesis was the first I tried. It worked well for the Kahr PM9 too.

I used to use the Mika Holster, but after the

'stickiness' quit working (and attempts to revive it failed), I switched to a Doubletap holster for pocket carry.

I carry either a M&P 340 or the 640, and I have the doubletap holster with the 'pocket hook' built in. I have found the more rigid construction of the thermoplastic works better to conceal the shape and the hook virtually guarantees the holster remaining in the pocket.

Two observations: The first is that, after two or three years, my doubletap for the 340 started to crack at the hook. I haven't gotten around to contacting them yet to see about repair or replacement. My opinion is that this crack developed because the inside radius for the hook was not dressed properly to remove a jagged cut that could be the stress point. However, no such crack has yet developed for the 640 holster.

The second observation is that I nearly exclusively wear fairly loose-fitting Duluth Trading Ballroom Carpenter Jeans. These have deep pockets to completely and easily "drop in" the whole holster-and-gun without the grip protruding. When I do wear (for example) khakis or dress pants, the print is more noticeable but the gun shape is effectively disguised. If your daily dress includes suits / dress pants, you may want to consider another holster type--possibly a carry t-shirt, or whatever....

My new 340 is on the way to my FFL!
I've owned two of them previously, but sold them both off....:banghead:

This new one will be a backup to my Colt CCO 1911.

I'll post here when I have pics and some range trips under my belt (I favor short-barreled loads in both 38+P and 357....usually Speer Gold Dot)
 
340 arrived today.

Great fit and finish, and nice trigger pull (dry firing with snap caps).

I'll get it out to the range tomorrow evening, and have decided to stick with .38+P Speer Gold Dot 135gr short barrel loads.

In the past, I've not loved the 357 blast and recoil from this light revolver, and feel that I can develop a much stronger shooting regimen with this j frame.....if I stick to +P loads.

Also, the last 340 I owned had the tritium sights go completely dead, which I suspect was caused by excessive recoil from the 357 loads.

I had forgotten how EASY a j frame carries!
 
Got out for a quick range session today.....had to cut it short, due to time constraints, but.....

I fired 70 rounds or so.......been awhile since I fired a j-frame.

I shot some 38 158gr FMJ and some 38+P 125gr JHP ammo.

Everything worked as expected, but I noticed that I was pulling all my shots to the right....trigger finger too "deep" into the trigger, perhaps?

Before leaving, I shot a string of 5 shots each from 3 yds/5 yds/7 yds/10 yds.

The pics below are the result of those 20 shots.
Not my proudest day on the range, but first time in a long while with a j-frame.

It is fit for pocket/IWB duty now, and I'll carry it loaded with Speer Gold Dot 135gr 38+P short barrel loads.

My prodigal 340 M&P.
I purchased a 340 several years ago and carried it for some time. I sold it to a friend who carried it on his ankle for a good while and sold it to another friend who never carried it. I recently "reaqquired" it and am carrying it on a regular basis. Don't know why I sold it?????????????????:confused: Carry in a Mika pocket holster or a Red Cent custom AIWB.
 
Well I have read through the 25th page of this thread, and won't get it finished tonight. But I have enjoyed it very, very much.

I have enjoyed it so much that yesterday I ordered an M&P 340 from Buds. With the new years coming up and everything I don't expect it to be at the gun shop until next week sometime.

But I will post pics, you can count on it.

Please let me reiterate what a fine thread I think this is and I thank yall for all of the fascinating info that yall are pumping into it.
