I've got a nice little Inland M1 Carbine. I'm not terribly accurate with the big aperture rear sights. Anyone here use those cheap scope mounts that replace the rear sight? I'd like to put on a red dot sight.
Only other one I've seen is the Ultimak, but very pricey. Any info appreciated. TIA

The only two scope mounts I would consider would be either the S&K no drill or tap mount or the Ultimak neither one permanently alters the rifle and both work fairly well.

A decent M1 Carbine shooter, plus a decent optic, is worth what, about 1,100 to 1,300 dollars? You're worried about a 50 dollar difference in the price of a mount? Think instead of what you'd like to end up with and how much you'll enjoy having something of quality over the long haul.

Many scoped rifles have as much, if not far more, value in the optics and mounts than in the original rifle. I think you'll find that to be a common situation in the rifle enthusiast's world.

Disclosure: I designed the UltiMAK M6 for the .30 Carbine and I use it extensively, so you might say I'm prejudiced.

Omni: If you've got $1100 in a 30 Carbine, either you've been hosed or you've got $500 worth of optics on it! My hunting rifles all have high quality mounts and glass, some setups approaching or exceeding the value of the rifle. However, this little carbine will simply be used for plinking and as a cheap red dot experiment to see if I like the setup. If I do, I'll invest in the Ultimak later as it's clearly superior to the rear sight replacement mounts. Thanks for your input and congrats on a very nice mount design.

A new Auto Ordnance carbine lists for $777. Most of the old used ones will run what, 800 and up for a good shooter? Add 300 or more for a good optic and you're already to 1,100. Say 400 for a real nice optic, 100 for a mount, and another 100 for a new stock, add a modern sling, and you could easily have over 1,400 into your Carbine setup paying the going rates on your accessories. That's not counting any night time accessory. And sure, you could go much cheaper, but that's for the good stuff.

A really nice 40s production, refurbed Carbine, all by itself, is 1,199.95 at Fulton, for another example. Add an Aimpoint Micro (which is perfect for the Carbine, by the way) and the mount and you're up to around 1,800.00. Just depends on what floats your boat.

I've never had any luck with the rear mount replacement units on the M1carbine. They just are not stable enough to provide consistent accuracy with a regular rifle scope. I was actually thinking of buying a beater stock and dremeling the forward area to accomdate a double ring mount in the barrel area to fit a pistol type scope. Now that, I think, Ultimark, has a replacement hand guard that allows a scope mount to be placed, I am reconsidering the idea. Has anyone here used the newer scope mount units that replace the handguard? I'd like to know how they manage to create a solid mounting with somthing that normally has a bit of play when fully assembled.
