Does anyone know if the M1 Garand is Chicago AND Cook County legal?

Edit: The Law says: "A semiautomatic rifle that has an ability to accept a detachable magazine and has one or more of the following..." However, the Garand feeds from a CLIP, into a FIXED mag, so its OK, right?

M1 Garand is fixed magazine. Not familiar with the law there. If you quoted it correctly it doesn't apply to a Garand.

Wouldn't count on it not counting anyway. Chicago and Cook County seem to like making their own rules regardless of what anybody else, the SC of the US included, says. Get a copy of the law and read the whole thing. There are probably some regulations too.
I suspect, if the CMP can sell and deliver there, you're OK though. Just a WHAG though. Ask 'em.

Following with interest as I am moving to the Chicago area in a couple of years - Looking at Lake County - but wife is pressing for locations in Cook County (still north side).

Yes, the M-1 Garand is legal in Chicago & Cook, Co. You answered your own question---it doesn't accept a detachable magazine.

Many if not most mail order houses will not ship any variety of items to Cook or Chi to avoid running afoul of the law---whether the item is actually unlawful there or not. As far as the CMP, you'd need to ask them. Once you get away from there, IL is a mostly 'red' state and most all guns and mags (apart from actual NFA machine guns) are perfectly legal. AP ammo in .30/06 for the M-1 is also exempt from the armor piercing ban in IL as it has been determined by the Dept. of the Treasury/ ATF to be of particular sporting use and to not lawfully be AP and this meshes with an exemption given such ammo in IL statute: http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/publicacts/pubact92/acts/92-0423.html
("...and any other projectiles or projectile cores that the U. S. Secretary of the Treasury finds to be primarily intended to be used for sporting purposes or industrial purposes or that otherwise does not constitute "armor piercing ammunition" as that term is defined by federal law.")

To own a gun in IL you need a FOID card from the ISP---It costs $10 for 10 years. The CCW permit is $150 / 5 years.

FWIW, the nice folks at the CMP have shipped several rifles (Garand, Carbine and 03 Springfield) direct to my office in Cook County, as well as ammo cans full of 30.06. Always fun to have somebody come in the office, and ask "What's in the ammo can?" Then when I say ammo, they look and laugh ... until I open it. Then they seem to be confused.

I sure hope all you Chi-town dudenals can keep a M1 Garand for protection.

With all the left-wing anti-Trump protesters trashing store fronts and businesses, not to mention the daily Chicago street crime, there's all sorts of opportunities for a classic "Get off my lawn" scenario, wherein one could suitably employ this old battle rifle to good effect.
