I'm not near the rifle so I can't do any testing. But since I got the M1 a while back it's been pushing the clip out after 4-5 rounds. That is it prematurely pops the clip up when there are 3-4 rounds left. It doesn't leave the rifle and it's just as easy as pushing it back down, but it sure is annoying. Nothing seems to be near the clip release.

Anyone else have this issue? Is it possible the recoil is activating the clip release?

if no one gives you a good answer here then go to the CMP forums...those guys will tell you the middle name of the guy who was on the assembly line that made those clips and what he had for lunch the day it was made...and they'll probably solve your problem.

First give this thread a read. Replacing the clip latch spring is a good (and inexpensive) start. While wear on other parts can cause this common problem the spring is the most likely cause. Thoroughly clean and lube the rifle if you haven't done so already. Matter of fact if this rifle is new to you it wouldn't hurt to buy a new spring kit from Orion 7 , the G98a kit covers pretty much all the bases.

There is an old army tech manual describing the fix. I remember replacing the bullet guide was part of the prescription but I cant remember if any other parts are involved. NOS bullet guide and clip latch spring should solve it, if not add a new clip latch as well. This is a common problem with well used M1 rifles BTW.

My exact first thoughts...get the one dated to your rifle. The early ones did not have a notch. I don't think it matters but it might.

First thing I would do is replace the operating rod spring.
If that doesn't solve the problem the bullet guide pad is probably worn down and it needs to be replaced.

If those fixes don't correct the problem only then would I look to the clip latch and its spring as well as the clip ejector spring in the trigger housing.

While replacing the op rod spring is a good idea if you dont know how old yours is I dont see how it would have any affect on the issue your rifle is having.
The most common causes of the issue is a worn clip latch spring or bad enblocs.
Make sure you are using good USGI enblocs or new commercial marked AEC
Rarely is a worn clip latch the culprit
As already stated if these things dont fix the issue you may need a bullet guide. The lobe may be worn out of spec, measure the lobe it should measure no less than .179 . Calipers wont do use a micrometer
Also make sure the bullet guide isnt bent

Oh, good point on another thing to check, make sure the follower arm, (The rod that the follower rides on), isn't bent, twisted or one of the follower hook tabs isn't broken off and both sides of those aren't twisted, beat up, bent out of position.
