Are there any other sources of M1 Garands besides CMP and overpriced corner store dealers. I am in a WWII historical reenactment battalion (see the link in the signature block) and therefore I need a period weapon. Along the same lines, do I need a C&R to order from a site like CMP? I am ex-military with 7 honorable years so would this satisfy any requirements? Thanks.

The CMP is the single best source for a M-1 Garand.

Go to www.odcmp.com for the exact info on what you need to do to qualify. I believe your discharge papers would serve as "proof of marksmanship activity" but check the website for yourself. As far joining a CMP affiliated club, I reccomend the Garand Collector's Society. Membership is only $20 or $25 a year.

You do not need a C&R or any other FFL to receive a rifle from the CMP. Once you've met the requirements, you place your order and they ship the rifle right to your door. They have a special exemption that allow them to do that. (They do run a NICS check on you when you submit your paperwork, btw.)
