M1 Garand vs M1A Super match

Hank:

The mount pictured is an older model "split rail" ARMS # 18 mount. The current ARMS 18 mount sports a solid rail the full length across..
I use a Bassett mount with the other rifle pictured... (mount not shown), if I want glass for it.

Another mount that I have and like, is the Bassett mount.

I would recommend either, but the Bassett is the easier mount to install. (Either should work on your SM M1A)

More information about M1A/M14/M1 can be found here....

Knowledge about the 2 rifles you have now would be my best suggestion for you, and here are a couple of books worth owning...

I wouldn't give up either rifle for a bolt gun.( Been there, done that, and regretted it). If your M1 is an SAI built rifle, then they do not make them anymore, plus the rifle has a lifetime warranty that travels with it. (Same with your M1A SM)

Fragout,

Thanks for the info on the scope mounts. Do they install like the mount that Springfield has ware you have to strip the rifle to get to the pin which holds the stripper base. Do I need to have a gun smith install the base. I have not taken either the M1 or M1A apart. I don't want to damage the bedding. Also, does the brass get damaged from the low mount. Hank

I am thinking of going with the Springfield mount in steel. I do not have photo's at this time. I will take some photo's this week. Please remember, these rifles are new, unfired.

Before you buy a Springfield mount do some reading here.

Lot of people have issues with the SA mount holding zero. I would recommend a Sadlak mount.

http://sadlak.com/si_improvements_to_bpt.html

The Sadlak is a improved Brookfield design. Also, Sadlak is the only Co. that offers a measuring jig for the SAI receivers. Some SAI receivers are not in spec and have difficulties with mount fitting. Sadlak well modify their mount to fit your rifle.

I have owned the SAI gen 1/2/3 mounts, and have not had very good results with any of them.

If your worried about your receiver being "out of spec or not", I believe that Sadlak sells the kit separate. It wont matter if your using a Bassett mount however.

Sadlak makes an excellent mount from my dealings with them, as does Smith Enterprise Inc. I end up building up the comb in some way to achieve proper cheekweld with either mount here. ( A lace on cheek piece, adjustable comb, or the 100MPH tape special.;) )

Note: If my stock was as nice as Madcratebuilders wood stock, the only thing I would use is a cheekpiece ...as he is using in his pic. There is no way in hell I would drill holes (adjustable comb) thru such a fine looking piece of rifle lumber as his example.

Is there a trick to stripping the M1A Super Match without damaging the bedding? I would really like to put a scope on this rifle. I have been saving a Leupold VX 111 8.5x25x50 long range target for 3 years or so. I am thinking of sending the scope back to Leupold to replace the reticle to a mildot for .308. It has a target dot. I don't know if its worth it. Cost app. 200.00.. I'm
I will take photo's. I will have to figure out how to put them on this web site. I was born in the age when their was no TV's. I'm a little slow with understanding computers.

None of my M1A/M14's are bedded Hank, and I have only worked with a few, none of them being a Supermatch.

Hopefully, someone here that is more familiar with bedded rifles(M1A SM specifically) can chime in with their thoughts on the matter.

In the meantime, here is a few contact numbers for you.............

1-800-680-6866 (SAI customer service)

1-800-617-6751 (SAI custom shop)

I think that you will get the answers your looking for by calling the custom shop.

You can use the other number to find out when your rifle was born, and how it left the factory... via the rifle's serial #. (In your case....both of your rifles)

Hope this helps some, as I try and help anyone new to the M1A/M14.:)

I plan on one of the adjustable comb as soon as I get a spare gi glass stock I can drill. The lace-on cheek piece you have used, was t it the Garand style? My strap-on cheek piece is about a 1" or more higher than I need, I should have ordered the short version.
I've been shooting my iron sight rifle a lot more this year.

Hank, check at the top of this page, it has several posts on how to do photo's.

You have to remove the stripper clip piece when you install a scope mount. It has a roll pin, I think you can drive it out from the top down, I need to go look at my rifle. If you can then you don't need to remove the stock to install the mount.

As far as changing your scope I would wait and shoot as is and then make a decisions. The mil-dot would be good for ranging if you are going to be shooting at several unknown distances. For bench shooting at the range it is not needed.

Thanks guys, You have convinced me on the scope mount. I like the Arms #18 only because it's low profile. I would like the scope to mount as low as possible even if I lose the iron site. Madcratebuilder, Your rifle is the cats meow!!! What is the MOA of your M1A. Hank

P.S. I need to talk about reloading for the M1A. If I post in Reloading Thread, will you go there?

M1A Super Match Pin Removel from Stripper Clip Housing

Hey Guy's, I called SA and she said I don't have to remove the stock. All you have to do is remove the trigger group, punch the pin out from the top and let it fall out the bottom. (SEE ATT.).
