I have a family member who has more guns hidden in his house than I could count. 4 guns in one of his glass gun cases however are easily visible. This guy is about 90 and says he has never sold any gun he has ever bought. Being that he is family and of sound mind, I asked him over Xmas about the M1 Garands he had. He told me that two were bought as surplus and still have the cosmoline on them (which I can see clearly) and two of them are used he picked up in garage sales. For years he was a university historian by trade and a junk dealer on the side. If you saw his house you would understand! He says that m1's were easily had after the war. Some of these days I hope to own one of the M1's in that cabinet. Can anyone tell me what manufacturer that might be by the description I have given? Where might I look on them to find out info? At this point I know nothing specifically about M1's other than their history, caliber, etc. These are not carbines. They are full sized M1 grunt rifles.

M1 rifles were made by several manufacturers. During WW2, Springfield Armory and Winchester made them. Post-war M1 rifles were made by Springfield Armory, International Harvester and Harrington & Richardson.

You'll have to take a look at the receiver heel to see the manufacturer and the serial number.

If you can get the serial numbers (or at least partial ones) you can approximate when the rifle was manufactured.
