Hi all,
Ok here's another qestion that most of you can answer have fun:
When did the USMC first make contact to the War Dept., Ordnance for the US Caliber .30 M1 Rifles for the cost and issue to the USMC?
Remember, it's the GREAT DEPRESSION and Ordnance in the War Dept., and Springfield Armory must "SELL" by getting Orders for the M1 Garand. Ordnance had used it's funding for the year already and when they asked for more funding the War Dept said NO. The only way to keep the M1 Garand going was to SELL it to other services. If not sold then the Project for the M1 Garand would and almost did fail. We were the only country to enter into WW2 with a semi-automatic Rifle as Standard issue.

A related question. The Army officially adopted the Garand in 1937. In 1940, the USMC conducted service rifle trials. What rifle did they select for standard issue?

Hi all,
Ordnance "sold" 400 M1 Garand Rifles. Without have any M1 Garands in production.
The date on this file is Feb. 21, 1936. The USMC would not adopt the M1 Garand until much later. They received these 400 rifles as the production began at SA.
