just want to say that my buddy and I were in the hills on Sat. We shot his SW 44RM, my Ruger BH with the 45 ACP cylinder, and his M1A (also my 39A—also fun...)

Now we were shooting only from 33 to about 55 yards. But seriously, you had to try to miss. The only miss I had was my fault and I called it before I saw it.

Sometimes, shooting is just for fun. And I figured this group would appreciate that.

When was your last fun shoot and what did you shoot?

Greg

Just for fun shooting we go to a state forest gravel pit. Last trip was in October before the snows. Took the M1 Carbine, AR15, Henry .22lr, S&W M29 Mountain Gun and Ruger SR22. Set up some steel targets and tons of clay pigeons 20-100. Yds.

That's about all I do these days Greg. I have to play inside most of the time, since suitable outdoor locales are a bit of a drive from my place -- the local indoor pistol club lets me use several of my rifles, however.

Last time I went there with a rifle was about three weeks ago, with my TC Encore carbine in 22 K Hornet. Did a couple of 5-shot one hole groups, but at 22 yards those aren't particularly impressive.

My one seriously fun routine is to shoot my 8.15x46R Wehrmann Mauser rifle at some historic (circa-1920-30s) reproduction Wehrsport targets that I proportionally scaled to their correct relative size at 22 yards. For scale, the holes here are 8mm. Believe me, it's a challenge getting a halfway decent group with that tiny rear V-notch on the Lange Visier sight!

Here's what the original targets look like, with metric dimensions:

I try to mix a little bit of fun in with every range shoot... otherwise it isn't... fun.

Oddly enough, my favorite fun shooters are... my M1a and my Garand, probably because they are very physical rifles, I get a certain amount of satisfaction just loading and operating them. I also enjoy shooting my AR's, probably because I am most familiar with them, but they don't have the absolute fun factor the M1a and M1 have.

Sometimes you have the most fun doing the simpler things!

Me and a Buddy used to sit on the bench top at the range, when no one else was there, and take turns shooting at a coke can on the ground with our pistols. We would throw it as far as we could and take turns shooting at it. We could make hits and roll it around out to a hundred yards or so. And yes, we did collect the can and the pieces before we left!

I used to do the electrical work at a few of the local fish farms. I could get a copy of their permit that allowed me to legally shoot pest on their farms. My Wife and Family and I have spent many a fun afternoon riding around shooting snakes. I'm talking by the hundred!

The Grandkids like to shoot at balloons tied to a large cardboard box. 22's or BB guns.

One of my farmer buddies that owns the ground where our private range is located plants pumpkins and watermelons that he gives to his friends and neighbors. An over ripe or damaged melon makes a fantastic target for a 45-70 at 200 yards!

And don't even get me to thinking about shooting falling plates!!!

Yup, fun times!

I just remembered a sort of turkey shoot we used to do after hours when I worked at a Boy Scout summer camp in the late '70s. We each put one dollar into the kitty and then pinned a dollar bill to the longest range archery target; participants would take it in turn shooting one arrow at it with the weakest bow we had. The first to hit the bill solidly (paper completely around the shaft) won the kitty. The task was so difficult that no one ever collected, so we happily rooted for each other to win. This kind of game can easily be scaled for handguns, rimfires, etc.: dime-sized target, unsupported positions, iron sights and so forth.

One of the long range matches that I used to shoot in had an "egg" shoot before the match. A postage stamp size piece of paper at 600 yards. Everyone anted up $5. You got one shot from a cold barrel with no sighters. It would build up to a pretty nice prize sometimes.

#5. Beaver Dams! Gallon jugs seem to work better than the small pints?

Any shooting time is fun even concentrated testing and challenges , but yes there are times it is REAL FUN to just bang a steel gong, knock down bowling pins and such without worrying about trying for the best group or score and if I miss a shot...oh well.

My standard M1A is at the top of my list for all around fun of that sort, got it dialed in in the black of a SR-1 target at 100 yds with the cheaper surplus ammo and that is that. Synthetic stock so no worries of damaging a nice wood stock, not a pre-ban with harder to find real military parts so it is not a real collectible so I just shoot it and clean it sometimes.

Same with my Bluesky import M1 carbine, not some posh collectible carbine so nothing to fret over but who can say a carbine is NOT fun? AR-15 or AK all fun also along with other guns but the M1A tops my list

What I miss is living where I could go out in the woods and destroy soda cans and stuff without rules of a range, can't do that where I live now but a small price because where I live now I'm much happier overall.
