Neat.

They should've shortened the stock. Maybe they have, but it doesn't look like it.

If I had to go with a 16" 7.62mm rifle, I think I'd prefer a FAL, though. Actually prefer barrels 18-22" long, but that's neither here nor there.

SWAT magazine did a excellent write up on all the big .308 battle rifles this month. Im glad Im not in the market for one yet, because Im really torn on all of them. I like the ar10 but not the price or the magazines, I also like the m1a, but now Im thinking about the FNFAl or cetme. Choices, choices, im glad ak is the next gun on my list, because all the .308 choices are tempting.

Boy that thing just doesn't look right. I would think from a practical standpoint if you were going to go with a .308, you would want to use it for longer range use. If you wanted it for close in work, why not go with a lighter more mobil .223 or even a good old shotgun.

The only thing that completely destroys my argument above is the classic, "Because I want it and it looks cool." At The High Road that really is the number one factor for a gun purchase!

Not really, Rojo. Short length 7.62MM weapons have been used by special forces with regularity. They even chopped down the M-60 for them. If you look at the balistics, I bet you will find that the .308 from 16 inches still has a pretty good edge over .223, even from a 20.

with equal bullet weights, a 16 inch .308 is about on par with a 25 inch .303. blast is pretty horrendous, but still useable.

I talked to the springfield reps, and they said that they can't cut down the synthetic stock, but you can special order one with a wood stock cut to your specifications.

Why not? I mean, the M14 doesn't have a buffer in the stock or anything. Why wouldn't they be able to shorten it? Why can they have a shorter wood one but not a shorter polymer one?

I think it looks pretty neat. Kind of like a Sci-Fi or movie gun. I don't know who it is marketed to maybe police (DSA has a shorty and HK does too). I wonder what it looks like and how it feels in person. I think if I ever wanted to go short I would go for a bush rifle.

nightcrawler, they can't shorten the stock because its hollow. You will lose the meat to put the buttplate screws in.

I think it looks neat and pretty functional too. I'd like to see if a folding stock works well on the short M14. Muzzle blast seems like a concern for .308 out a 16" barrel.

I dunno man....

The basic M1A/M14 always struck me as too long, and this strikes me as too short.

I guess I'm a scout squad/18 inch kinda guy.

I think these look good, but I also would prefer the 18" barrel for this caliber. When I first heard about this model, I was excited about the idea of using the new shorter muzzle brake on an 18" scout squad M1A. Then I found out the new short brake (which I've heard touted as Springfield's most effective brake) is an integral part of the new 16" rifle - it doesn't connect in the same way as the standard M1A/M14 muzzle brakes and flash suppressors. I wish/hope that Springfield (or someone) will make a short brake like this that I can put on an 18" scout rifle. That would give 2" more barrel (maybe 100 FPS more velocity?), less muzzle blast, and still be a couple of inches shorter than the current Scout Squad M1A with the standard (overly long to me) brake. I think the standard Springfield brake is designed more to maintain the look of the M14 flash suppressor than because the length is needed in a muzzle brake.

I think I read somewhere that the velocity out of these things is around 2200 fps (someone correct me if I'm wrong). That's a big drop.

If the reliability has not been compromised, I think I would still choose this think over an AR or AK, if something important cropped up.

They still look neat, though. (Where are they on the SA site? I couldn't find it.)

I shot this PIG

It is awesome. I have one on preorder with a local distributor. I shot about 20 rounds through it at the Springfield Challengin in Memphis last September.

Knocks- No GI parts, No Chrome Barrel. :cuss:

Plus- With an Aimpoint 2x I hit 350 head shots and double taps. The shortened barrel is loud to those around you. Like a Bushie mini-Y.

I also think that the polymer stock is a moulding operation and for a shorter one, they would need a custom mold.

I would think if I can get a custum chromey made from someone, that this gun will be buried with me.

It is that good.

It looks Marvelous! (Ricardo Montleban imitation)

I have a FAL Carbie with a 16 inch barrel and muzzle blast is not bad

Other than not being real fond of the old safety in the triggerguard thing

I like it.....

Being from S.A... I am sort of afraid to ask how much

There's a write up on the M1A SOCOM in the new issue of SWAT. It doesn't go much into detail, but some problems the writer had was with the use of XS sights and the muzzle brake. He made sure to mention that his rifle was not the production model and that XS will make a new sight better suited for a rifle and will have the option of not having the muzzle brake.
