I just bought a Norinco M14 Sporter and its in pretty good shape except the windage knob had no "clicks". I guess it is worn since it is original and I've read here that the rear sights may have "soft" metal.

I tightened the Windage knob screw a little and it made the clicks more positive but when I turn the Windage knob clockwise it gets harder and harder to turn.

If I disassembled the entire and sight and cleaned it and reassembled it, do you think this would help or should I just look at replacing some parts ?

I'm on a pretty tight budget so what are the minimum parts I neet to replace to fix the problem ??

Any advice or tips appreciated.

Disassemble the rear sight; inspect, lube and reassemble. That's the only way you'll find out what parts, if any, need to be replaced.

I assume that you tightened the locking screw on the windage knob itself, to insure that it was properly assembled.

Sorry

I got my up/down and sideways mixed up on my post....and yes, I did tighten the windage knob screw

Always start with a thorough cleaning.

Guns are dirty creatures and crud finds its way into every little crevice.

As nicholst55 said, dissasembly is the only way to know if you will need to replace anything, anyhow.

Got it apart and cleaned it...it was pretty dirty but no metal slivers or any large chunks of stuff...

But, now I cannot get it together and make the knobs work the way they should. I put the base and spring in, then the aperature, then I screwed the windage know in until it stopped, then I screwed the elevation knob in until it stopped. I pushed the aperature all the way down and loosened the screw on the knob thinking I could reset the dial to zero. But, when I screwed everthing down tight, its too tight and sometimes the windage knob also most the aperature.

Help would be appreciated...I have looked at several sites but no one gets into the small details/sequence for reassenbling the screws. I must have done something in the wrong order...

Edited: Never mind; I got it. I did not notice that the elevation shaft had a flat that had to mate with the windage knob...

Clicks are loud on the elevation side and there but fainter on the windage knob. But overall, a great deal of improvement..

Thanks for the suggestions.

Cleaning and proper reassembly is more often than not all that is needed.

Good show!

There exists a repair disc for damaged or worn elevation "teeth" on rear sight tower. You disassemble completely place disc over original elevation click surface. Then reassemble per tech manual or above mention CMP site and use as normal, good loud clicks and they last.
Not sure but I think you can even get 1/2 minute disc's.
