How do I refinish this stock. I have it striped down. The problem is that I don't know what wood it is. It seems soft. Its redish in color. What can I do to it? I'm very new at this. Any help would be great!

I haven't tried but one time. I just completed a .303 Enfield. I used some stuff called Formby's to strip it down then a blade to scrape it to remove scratches. Then I sanded with very fine sand paper. Last, I used three coats of linseed oil. It looks pretty good to me but it started pretty good, too. I don't know what wood is used on your rifle.Wait till some others with experience with your type of rifle weigh in with their favorite "tried and true" methods. Good luck!

I restocked mine with an ATI polymer:neener:

Honestly, I wonder about Hungarian military officials and their tastes...
The M44's I have seen are either the red you spoke of or a highly varnished yellow color. Of the two the red is nicer looking to my eyes. My guess is that they are some form of pine as they are truly soft and clear. Mine is so soft that my fingernails can dent it! I'd advise that you use a hard finish like poly or something so that it'll hold up after all your hard work.
